Agree, the wing back roles don't suit either him or Hoilett, so perhaps the only position is where Hoilett has been played in the last couple of pre -season games - the central player behind 2 strikers. Hoilett has done very well there - perhaps the same will happen to Phillips.

I think we need another striker as others have said, Phillips isn't one and Remy is a ? As is Adel - if he's off we need another AM. In CM we still need another DCM to cover Henry. Need another Keeper if Cesar is off. Then with no other outgoings we should be done.

We already have a third goalkeeper - Joe Lumley.

Why would we need to pay for a third choice? The chances are they won't get on the bench, let alone anywhere near the pitch.

When Greeno is out with flu before the ManU match, and Murphy pulls a hamstring during the prematch warm up, do we all chant Jo Lumley's name with confidence when he comes out, or rush off to answer an urgent call of nature?

I thought with GK injuries, you allowed emergency loans ???

Lumley hasn't been tried and tested at the top level, of course. But he looks to be quite good, actually. I don't know if we should expect better as our third choice but maybe we could hope for better as our second choice.

Thanks for that correction as I obviously I missed it.

But assuming that Cesar finally goes, are the back up's good enough for the Premiership? Anyway, I fully agree that this is not our priority.

To me, this is the relevant question.

Lumley looks to be OK for the third choice, but do we need a better second choice 'keeper?

It is a very specialised position as the player has to be content with not playing, being well paid (but not by premier footballing terms) & able to remain ready to step in at a second's moment. As well as getting on well with the squad & hopefully the first choise 'keeper.

They also know that the third 'keeper may be preferred if the position needs filling for a longer period. These are few & far between. We have one that fits all of that criteria.

Of course it is a gamble that Green won't be seriously injured, but let Murphy see out the rest of his contract. The chances are that he will still be glued to the bench!

In answer to the goalkeeping emergency loan. This was stopped due to abuse.

If you have a contracted goalkeeper on your books (including youngsters), you have to play them & a request for a loan will be turned down. This was the case when Cerny stood in for Kenny three seasons ago & we were not allowed to loan a backup.
