The Donald has broken the ironyometer. Sacked the head of the Bank because she "may have made false statements".

He's behaving like some latter day Caesar. Emperor of America.
Thinks his position as President gives him carte blanche to do anything he likes. Ultimate power.
I assume he is wrong, otherwise all he is doing is exposing the fatal (and carefully hidden for generations) flaws in their beloved Constitution.

We don't get a lot of Australian news stories here.
That woman who poisoned her family with mushrooms is the only one that springs to mind...

Maybe this is a large part of differing views across the globe on these things. You 100% can no longer turn on mainstream news that u have watched for years and expect to get a picture of what is going on in the world, even ur own country.

In the end a degree of trust is needed in my view, or folks end up going down the rabbit hole.

I know the BBC is far from perfect, and sometimes not very impartial (I'm happy to admit it is generally left-leaning).
But I trust it to be basically honest, even if it makes mistakes.

I don't get my news from anywhere else - well, aside from footy news on Sky Sports.

    Can't say I'm happy about this;

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn848g3ll09o

An independent body now needs the specific approval of the Justice Secretary (a politician, albeit an elected one) to change sentencing guidelines. The Minister will now have the power of veto.
Another bit of chipping away at the independence and impartiality of our Legal system.
An independent Judiciary is one of the key foundations of a free society.
    Not to be undermined lightly.

I go on Facebook then press the video button then scroll through all sorts.
I see protests throughout the country. I'll then WApp a mate who knows nothing about what I have sent him.
One day he replied, "what boats?"<laugh>

I only found out yesterday that there is an old pub near to where I live which is housing asylum seekers, women and children only. Apparently there are ongoing protests outside it.
Facebook and X are not reliable news sources, due to the algorhythms which direct the user to like-minded posters.

    It has ever been thus.
Why do people buy the same newspaper every day? Because it's front page and politics tells them only what they want to know.

Make people angry enough any you'll get their vote and/or their money to subscribe to your newspaper.
How those people then vent that anger against others doesn't matter to the politicians & press men who incite it.

They have your X on the ballot paper or your subscription payment - which is all they want from you.
Some other suckers - "the bleeding hearts and artists" as Roger Waters put it - can douse the fires, sweep up the broken glass and patch up the injured victims.

The Travelodge up by the old Kwik Fit in Bromley supposedly was not taking paying customers not so long ago. I do not know if this is still the case.

    When
When I lived in Forest Hill the newsagents would have a big pile of Guardians and a small pile of Daily Mails. In Orpington they have a tiny pile of Guardians and 3 large piles of a Daily Mails.

    Another step into darkness.

The Government is considering introducing ID cards which everyone must carry, and produce on demand to anyone in authority.
Our mainstream politicians have failed to protect the moderate, tolerant and free society they were elected to defend.
So now they take away our freedoms one by one, in the short-sighted hope that such actions will make things all right again.

Sleep-walking into a Police State won't make anything better.
But it's too late now anyway. The damage was done a long time ago.
Leaders like Starmer and Badenoch have lost their right to decide our future.
That power is now passing to other players.

Personally ID cards don’t bother me , I’ve got nothing to hide , but they’re saying this will stop the boats - it won’t , they just want to be seen as doing something about them , another failed attempt.

ID cards are nothing to worry about. They should have been brought in years ago. Remember people smuggling predates the small boats, it just wasn’t so brazen.

It is said by many that those who've done nothing wrong (have nothing to hide) have no reason to fear having to carry an ID card.
    That is a tempting argument.

But who decides whether you have done something wrong?
Today it's a nominally independent justice system backed up by a relatively impartial Police service and a relatively reasonable Government.
Tomorrow - it could be anybody.

It will take a very long time to bring in but having ID cards in the UK is not a bad thing.

It should be made compulsory to have an ID. Over here in Brazil, I stand corrected, but without the ID(a CPF number) you cannot open a bank account and without this you virtually do not exist and are very limited in what you can do over here.

Mr Boat Man cannot open an account with Barclays without the ID so as a result would not be able to live in the UK............in theory.
