I suppose the point I'm making is that whether we manage 2,3,5 or 10 seasons in the Prem before we next get relegated, what we'll all remember for the rest of our days is a cup success not a series of mid table finishes. And furthermore, without relegation you don't get the sheer undiluted joy of promotion.

I think the point that the "we need to stay up over everything" brigade (including myself) would make is that if you look at who wins the cups it is generally one of the big 6 but the League Cup especially every so often goes to a mid to lower end Premiership club but very seldom in modern times to anyone under that level so I would argue that for us to win anything we will probably need to be a top flight club.

I also think that if we are to progress and develop the ground and improve the squad then we are dependant on having the resources to do so. Sadly football is much more of a business than it used to be and I do think that in fairly short order there will be a core of say 12-15 "Premier League clubs", another 10-12 "yo-yo" clubs and the rest will only taste Premier League football once in a blue moon. Personally I think that our best chance of success in the league and cups is to be one of the top 12-15 as in my lifetime we have spent more time outside the top flight than in it.
