Cup Envy

Just relaxing with a quick jack and coke after a hard week, and with **** all of interest on telly I've got the dvd of the 73 cup final playing away.

Just watching it makes me envious I wasn't around for it, really jealous of you veterans who will have so many memories of that glorious day. Hope it's not too long before I get to witness what you old codgers did

No matter how many times I watch the DVD it still surprises me the difference between the then and now. Just seen the first of our many full blooded tackles go flying in; Pitt in the first minute or so. Monty picking up the ball from a back pass and our lads putting their keeper under pressure.

Changes for the better? Dunno. I like watching the older games and wincing at some of the challenges but the lad just gets up and runs off at 100 miles an hour and getting on with it. Not like today where the pussy does cartwheels to get the other lad sent off.

Cheers and looking forward to seeing 'that goal' and 'that save'.

I remember '73 well, but I'm only 49! Just pushing 11 I was and I'd thought we'd always win after that. Didn't take long to disabuse me of the notion though

We don't seem to take them seriously of late though eh? Wasn't around for 73 but remember going to all the home games of our 92 cup run and then to Hillsborough for the semi after queuing from 3AM for tickets outside Roker Park and getting a pie and bovril from the lad with the window in the side of a house as I recall. My paper round funded budget spent so didn't make the final unfortunately. The atmosphere was amazing and the first big cup match at Hillsborough since the disaster I think, standing in the massive Kop terrace and having good craic with the Norwich fans before, during and after. The whole thing (apart from the football but including the 4 inches of piss under the stand!) is etched in my memory forever.

Think it's a real shame Vaux that the club don't realise the investment for the future they'd be making by having a decent cup run, but more so that so many young uns have missed out on this feeling of anticipation as you progress through the rounds, let alone actually win a cup!

Do you reckon we could compete in the cups now as well as the league, given the number and quality of recent signings? Will SB select a strong team this season or is the cost of league failure too high nowadays for clubs like ours?

It's not just cup envy mate, it's football envy.

Now we watch players sat on a subs bench earning mega bucks, not bothered if they play or not, as long as they get enuff dough for a new Bentley this week.

Tackles, whats them?

Hopefully we have a squad now, where we can take the cups a little more seriously.

I was one of the few Newcastle fans who wanted Sunderland to win, and jumped up when Porterfield scored. I was watching TV in colour (a bit of a novelty then) in my mate's house with his dad. They both looked at me as if I'd just arrived from another planet.

It was like the Alamo at times, but the fighting spirit Sunderland showed in the face of a team which had appeared unbeatable is something I will never forget. A fine memory for you chaps.

And God bless Bob Stokoe, hard man but a Newcastle and Sunderland legend.
