I'll bow to your higher wisdom Pouchy. I'm not as experienced as you in knowing how long Trev leaves people satisfied for before they want another go!
Here's a thing, I have dual nationality so on the one hand I am an oppressor being English and on the other I am oppressed being Irish, I hate myself!!
It's a real snake-pit of a subject. I do have to laugh at the irony of a show like the MOBO's. Music Of Black Origin awards? Instant chaos if Music Of White Origin awards was suggested. Although that would be nothing more than 'Classical' music I suppose.
Cultural appropriation my arse. How about everyone who whinges about 'cultural appropriation' who isn't from the culture that invented jeans or shoes hands over every pair they own, and not eat anyone else's food, or listen to their music, or blah blah blah. Go for full segregation across the board in other words, which is exactly the thing these types are supposed to be opposed to. You couldn't ask for a clearer case of someone being welcoming towards another culture than adopting a part of it that they like the look of either, but apparently that's not good enough for these people. This stuff is just yet another case of people who enjoy/profit from stirring the ****-pot seizing the opportunity to feign offense about something.
Don't you think you're getting wound up over nothing though? I've never had anybody in my life experience mention 'cultural appropriation' one way or the other. It's so rare it's almost an urban myth. Yet we have 50-odd posts saying what a terrible thing it is that all these people are accusing white people of it. Your last sentence describes what all these people commenting are doing too.
I don't its as rare as you think. Perhaps rare to you but its getting quite a bit of use elsewhere. There are daily stories of it. Just today Gucci, a massive fashion brand has been accused of it and its been reported across many major news sources worldwide. It is cutting across so many sectors currently and gathering pace. Arts, education, sports, politics, popular culture, etc etc. These are are just a handful of stories from the numerous in the last month. I think its probably wider spread than you think. The problem is the worlds media have latched on to it as a subject that divides so they are pushing it hard to sell copies. Unfortunately loads of gullibles are buying in. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-st...piece-sparks-debate-on-cultural-appropriation https://www.aol.com/article/news/20...u-accused-of-cultural-appropriation/23369567/ https://hyperallergic.com/428077/co...-after-accusations-of-cultural-appropriation/ https://www.teenvogue.com/story/little-mix-jesy-nelson-wears-locs-cultural-appropriation-controversy https://www.teenvogue.com/story/afr...-appropriation-black-panther-african-american https://www.hindustantimes.com/fash...hite-models/story-do5F5n2VSkF0llrDrCJ0TO.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-5328767/Kim-Kardashian-hits-cultural-appropriation.html https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/rise-...concern-over-cultural-appropriation-1.3805126 http://www.dailycardinal.com/articl...-wisconsin-and-beyond-in-form-of-mascot-names
The handful of nutters going on about it will pick high profile targets and the media will lap it up. I just filter this kind of **** out and maintain my peaceful state. Much like I do with people talking about X Factor, soap operas, and other trivial ****e.
Indeed, it's not a thing that's heard being complained about very often, and I bet that's because it isn't complained about often, which I bet is because it's an absurd concept to everyone except this lunatic fringe (and to plenty of them too I'll bet)... but the media has made it today's news/topic of conversation, and people here have been asked to react to it. I don't know why that's the same thing.
Isn't this cultural appropriation? please log in to view this image Or is this just bollocks just aimed at evil whitey? please log in to view this image
Common sense approach to a nonsense subject. Can’t say it gets me vexed. We usually get a wide range of opinion on here and yet no one has any time for it.
It's not a handful of nutters though, this is something that has found traction in universities along with safe spacing and is packaged in with the denigration of this and other countries colonial past, this is not a trivial fad to dismiss lightly it is another way to limit both thought and expression, we are moving more and more into a society where only the right opinion is allowed expression, if you haven't read Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm you should.
