I think that's fairly fair. Hull and Palace aren't sides with mega-rich backers, and neither have a squad that's clearly a cut above the rest of the championship. So financially they'll be slightly worse off than us this summer, but our squad is better. At most they could add around 7 decent first team players, any more and they risk doing a QPR. But that might only get them to a position equivalent to where we are now, and we've still got RvW to join up and presumably other decent summer signings to come. They'll have that freedom and determination that comes with promotion, but I still don't think our side feel they have a right to be in the Prem, so hopefully we won't be lacking too much in that department either. Having said that, I think next season is going to be really tough to call. I can't see Newcastle being that bad next season, and if Villa hold on to Benteke they should also improve significantly. Southampton and West Ham have plenty of money to spend, and Fulham are unlikely to get dragged into it. That leaves Sunderland and Stoke who could have interesting times with their respective managers, ourselves and the promoted sides.
Every time Palace have been in the Premier League (not the top tier, just Prem), they have been relegated! Four times they've tried to stay up, and four times they've failed!
That's a good point, those teams you've mentioned I can't see them being that bad again. I think Sunderland, Stoke, Palace and Hull will all be down there. I think (or hope) NCFC will improve and be a bit more of a comfortable season and playing better. Well maybe Stoke might just because they're trying to change the way they play, so my early prediction will be Stoke, Palace and Hull.
The biggest problem Palace face is attracting players. If you want to play in London they're bottom of the list below Chelsea, arsenal, spurs, west ham and Fulham.
Fulham could struggle, they are an old team that needs massive rebuilding. Newcastle are one of those teams that just seem a lurch away from a crisis. West Brom face losing Lukaku and remind me of Bolton when they lost Sturridge and floundered the next season. If Everton lose some players in the summer and don't get the appointment correct anything could happen. Wet Sham and Stoke will surely be found out next year. Sunderland have a loose cannon with his hand on the red button. Villa seem to be improving but are they capable of defending a lead? Palace and Hull could get it just right, who knows?
Never quite sure about newly promoted teams, the past couple of seasons most of the clubs have held their own in a way, but quite a few of those effectively got relegated from the Premiership in the first place and had quite a lot of strength within in their squads when battling out of the Championship. Haven't really paid too much attention to the Championship this season so I don't know what the gulf in quality is like these days.
That is the logical view but it does rather repeat the feeling of everyone else two years ago who said QPR will be ok Norwich and Swansea will go straight back down.
To be honest, from the teams that finished eighth or lower, there is not a lot of difference between them, could be anyone who goes down. We only ended up 2 points below Swansea.
I was considering mentioning Everton too. Fellaini is reported to be a target for Moyes, and I could easily see Baines leaving this summer too. Both will go for reasonable sums though, so they'll have a fair amount to reinvest in their squad, I guess it'll depend on the quality of the manager that comes in. I think there's too much quality in their side to really consider relegation, but I doubt they'll finish 6th again. I think the difference there is that we got lucky with 2, if not 3 of the relegated clubs self-imploding. Wolves and Blackburn practically threw their seasons away. I could see Sunderland, and perhaps Newcastle, doing the same next season, but who really knows? I can't see all 3 promoted teams surviving without a serious crisis at other clubs though. On Carrabuh's point, I guess there was little to separate a lot of teams, but Reading were cut adrift for a long while, and are perhaps the closest thing this season to the teams about to come up. Reading even had a relatively wealthy backer too, which (I think?) is more than Hull and Palace do?
Exactly. Very little between 10 clubs last year, if you exclude qpr and reading Just shows you can spend a decent chunk of money over a number of years and still be dragged into a scrap I'm glad it's palace, as Watford were probably more of a threat to us with their overseas backing
Between the bottom 13 teams in the Premier League and the top Championship teams, there's barely any difference whatsoever. Goodness knows why, but it seems there's barely been a better time to establish yourself in the top flight in the Premier League era. S lot of deadwood has been shifted in recent years though, to be replaced with clubs on the up.
It's going to be an interesting season ahead for all the remaining clubs who finished in the bottom 10, plus the newly promoted ones. A lot will depend on signings (I wonder if we'll see another Benteke or Michu?) and also who stays - Bale and Benteke are my 2 key players to change clubs in the summer.
Whilst I agree the bottom of the PL is much of a muchness, I'm not sure I'd extend that to the championship. Of the last 6 teams to come up, ourselves, Swansea and QPR were helped in the first season by others imploding, whilst this year Southampton and West Ham invested significantly. That leaves Reading who kept faith with the majority of their promotion side. To me that suggests that unless other teams have a shocker, any promoted team is going to struggle without significant improvements to their playing side. Cardiff might have the money, but I'm not sure that Hull or Palace do. It'll be interesting though, and I certainly won't be writing any of them off already, but it'll be interesting to see how the summer unfolds. I think the bottom 2/3rds of the PL are coalescing to a similar ability because there's little chance of any of them breaking into the top 6, and because of that most clubs have pretty similar transfer/wage budgets, in comparison to the big boys. In that area of the PL, it seems doing better than others is really only down to whether you make a particularly inspired signing or not. Swansea, West Brom and Fulham have done well on the back of Michu, Lukaku and Berbatov, who they've had for far less than their 'real' worth. In comparison Adam Johnson, Gaston Ramirez and Charlie Adam perhaps failed to deliver the impact that was expected of them. Hopefully RvW will be that inspired signing for us, and we'll be able to compete for a top half finish.
Well hello there my little yellow and green feathered foes!!! With the promotion of Crystal Palace I thought Iâd share a little pattern with you Budgerigars... 1972-73 Division One 19. Coventry City P 42 W 13 D 9 L 20 F 40 A 55 -15 35pts 20. Norwich City P 42 W 11 D 10 L 21 F 36 A 63 -27 32pts 21. Crystal Palace P 42 W 09 D 12 L 21 F 41 A 58 -17 30pts 22. West Bromwich Albion P 42 W 09 D 10 L 23 F 38 A 62 -24 28pts 1980-81 Division One 19. Brighton & Hove Albion P 42 W 14 D 07 L 21 F 54 A 67 -13 35pts 20. Norwich City P 42 W 13 D 07 L 22 F 49 A 73 -24 33pts 21. Leicester City P 42 W 13 D 06 L 23 F 40 A 67 -27 32pts 22. Crystal Palace P 42 W 06 D 07 L 29 F 47 A 83 -36 19pts 1994-95 Premiership 18. Southampton P 38 W 06 D 14 L 18 F 45 A 66 -21 32pts As you can see Norwich City have finished in the bottom three with, or have been relegated with, Crystal Palace once every decade since the 1970âs. 2013-14 Premiership... 18-20 Crystal Palace; Norwich City; +1 ?! Pretty good odds Iâd say that this little pattern will continue into a fifth decade next season. You know what?! Suddenly Iâm feeling rather optimistic that your luck is FINALLY going to run out you merry band of, carrot crunching, bird brain suckers! Enjoy. xXOXOXOx
Mike, how many seasons have we spent in the same league as Palace, and not been in the bottom 3 with them?
Irrelevant to the fact that you lot are relegated from the Premiership once a decade with Palace. Given that the chances of both you and Palace being the top division for more than one season are ridiculously low, I'd say your goose is well and truly cooked DHBudgerigar.
I am not sure Cardiff have actually got that big a budget. The take over pointed more toward the paying off of loans and ground improvements, leaving a considerably smaller amount for buying players. I don't know what the figure is but I am guessing quite lowish compared to what Southampton, QPR and some others have parted with recently on promotion. Why I think it is quite low, and even possibly lower than I think is that they made no signings last summer or in January that actually cost a great deal of money and it makes me ask why not, why did they not make a significant investment (ala Leicester City) to make the push for promotion? Did they really believe last August they would get promoted with the current team? ( I didn't).
