Just an observation from the match last night but towards the end yesterday, Palace started to create a few chances/half chances because, in my opinion, we kept on pressing high up the pitch. By this time Palace had effectively pushed their midfield forward and when our press failed they had players in the space between our midfield and defence who had time and space to create a few opportunities for that wonderful striker Wickham. A better team/player might have punished us and set up a nervy last 15 minutes. It’s a hard balancing act between pushing on and protecting what you already have, but maybe with a 2 goal lead one of the midfielders should just sit in and let the others press, to provide cover, so long as we don’t return to those days when we sit on our 18 yard line and invite attack after attack.
The first 45 minutes were played almost entirely in Palace's half. It's almost impossible to sustain a press like that for 90 minutes, but as you say, anything is preferable to sitting back and inviting them on, like we have seen Saints do so many times in the past. Even at 2-0, I prefer to see us trying to push on for a third.
Oh I don’t know, I think it was far more satisfying watching him turned into prowsies little bitch and told what to do and where to go.
My palace mate who went last night, who likes a bit of banter and doesn't freely give compliments was seriously impressed and said it was like watching Barcelona. I am not that pleased with him. I have seen saints 4 times at home this season and have not seen them win. He has seen saints win more than me this season.
Just rewatched the match. Jwp is fast becoming one of my favourite players. So impressed with the job he did on zaha
Yes, I've just finished watching the match. I went for the 90minutes due to Ralph's comments about it being the best away performance this season. And if they've bossed a game any more than that, against PL opposition then I'd be very surprised. Really impressive play and excellent to watch, with two super goals: 1st: https://www.footballorgin.com/cryst...-full-match-premier-league-21-january-2020/3/ 2nd: https://www.footballorgin.com/cryst...-full-match-premier-league-21-january-2020/4/
I honestly thought we'd be one of the first on tonight. I'm shattered and going to bed. Take that motd.
Ridiculous order tonight. Who gives a **** about Watford or Everton, or Man ****ing Utd for that matter?
That Cenk Tosun miss was the worst I have seen for a very long time. The fact that he had so much time and yet so little composure. Dreadful.
Yeah that could have been disastrous for Vesty & us. Very lucky there. Our next PL opponents might not be so generous.
I think things in football happen for a reason. The 9-0 made us stronger. The Vesty mistake changed him in that game, he had a good game after that.
Was lucky enough to be at this one. Best I’ve seen us play away for years (and yes I was at The Bridge too). We just had so much control over the game. PEH and JWP were outstanding and Armstrong and Redmond matchwinning performances. Such an enjoyable evening.
I just watched the whole 90 minutes again, and it was even better than watching it on a live stream. There wasn’t a single poor performance from our team, apart from a couple of errors here and there, mostly by the strikers it has to be said. Shane could easily have had a hat trick, while Redmond and Armstrong might have had a few more. Romeu looked a little ring-rusty, which is understandable, and was sometimes following play rather than predicting it, but was solid. Armstrong and JWP linked up really well down the right, especially in the second half, almost as well as Redmond and Bertie did throughout. Jack Stephens has matured into a really sound, ball-playing CB, sending balls forward to our players almost unerringly. The pressing was first class, almost to the 90th minute. It’s so refreshing to see a Southampton side not trying to sit on a lead but continually searching for another goal. Finally a word for Alex McCarthy, who didn’t have a lot to do but commanded his area brilliantly.
If Shane had scored that chance, var would have disallowed it anyway. Didn't notice the clever little tug that allowed him the space to run in to.
