Cryptic Clues

Couple of questions.
What does gay have to do with it?
How do you drink a teapot?
 
<doh> I've done some investigation into cryptic clues. So many things to look out for that hint at what type of clue it is. Cryptic clues are for intellectuals with a good foundation of general knowledge.

"The distinctive quality of the intellectual person is that the mental skills, which he or she demonstrates, are not simply intelligent, but even more, they focus on thinking about the abstract, philosophical and esoteric aspects of human inquiry and the value of their thinking."

My general knowledge is not great and I don't regard myself as an intellectual. No wonder I can't get the ****ing things.
