I still feel the main points are being missed here. Terraces were about for donkeys years without any great problems or trouble so nobody is suggesting that terraces per se cause trouble. It was the element of our society it attracted that caused the problem - the section that were looking for ' bovver ' and were not really interested in football. They could accumulate in large groups, freely move about, fight, kick and then leg it. It became tribal warfare which continued outside the ground before and after the match catching innocent people in the mayhem. Children and families stopped going to matches and whilst the authorities tried segregation it didn't stop the problems and in the end caused the tragedy that eventually led to all seater stadia being made compulsory. Would the reintroduction of the new limited terracing bring back all the old problems - probably not but why take the risk by taking a step back to the past? Why spend millions ripping out seats that cost millions to put in and more millions putting in new terracing that may or may not increase revenue just so that a few people can indulge in a trip down memory lane. In the new regimented terrace how are you going to guarantee a child can see anything?
Customers, sport and all other forms of live entertainment have to improve and move forward to survive in the days of free entertainment such as TV. 60 years ago all you could do on a Saturday was play or watch live sport. Carrow Road was terracing on three sides - 2 without even a roof - and the only seating was an old wooden construction containing long wooden benches - you had to take or hire a cushion to prevent permanent damage to your arse. Nobody minded - there was nothing else to do. Suddenly other forms of entertainment appeared, people had more money in their pockets and football had competition. Everything had to be improved and quite quickly cover and more comfortable seating appeared. Long before seating became compulsory most forward thinking clubs had converted most of the ground to seats partly to combat the problems on the terraces and get children and families back to the games. It has worked - just compare our current gates and income to previous spells in the Premiership. It ain't broke so why fix it? All sports and entertainments have drastically improved their comfort and facilities - why is football the only one where some of the customers want to go backwards?
