Innocent until proven guilty, but if he's been out drinking after hours and getting into bother again then I have no sympathy.

You're 35 Ben, when it gets to midnight go home and see your wife and kids.
More ****ing bad behaviour from members of the England cricket team......I wouldn't care, but,in Stokes' case, not impressive on the pitch either!
If he goes and they give the captaincy to Brook it'll be more disaster, because he's not up to it.
What a shambles at the start of summer ffs!

So, sounds like Stokes and Atkinson were out for a drink. Bit of bother with a couple of young Rugby players and one of them has aimed a punch at Gus Atkinson (and missed). Nothing instigated by Stokes/Atkinson, but questions over whether they have broken team protocols by being out passed midnight on the day of/after the test match.

Interesting point - are players technically still under curfew once the match has ended? Either way, it's not a great look but doesn't need to precipitate the public flogging that some seem to be calling for.

These are high profile sportsmen paid a great deal of money to represent their country. I completely understand, after a match, they would want to relax and have a drink, but surely that doesn't need to involve a night club in the early hours. That just says to me a lack of professionalism and discipline, which,in the McCullum and Stokes era has been far too obvious.

I disagree with your point in the main, but given what has gone on recently in Australia and New Zealand I think the players should have been a bit more savvy and stayed out of view. To use the popular phrase (that I hate) - the optics aren't great when the first opportunity after a winter of shame, has the Captain of the team involved in a nightclub incident. These lads have to be smarter than that.

Think that's what I mean when I say lack of professionalism.......although I suppose I could have used lack of intelligence.

Six of the current England team have now been in trouble for drinking, including out of hours, in the last six months. Over half the team. Mind boggling.

Stokes will have to resign. But why is it like this? Who sets the standards? Who insists on them? Why do they even NEED a curfew?

Right up to Richard Gould people are not doing their jobs. Gould, Key and McCullum should be gone tomorrow.

But it will be just Stokes. I think he'll pack cricket in.

Sounds like Stokes will step down as Test Captain and miss the rest of the NZ series. What happens after that is still up in the air.

What a mess

Stokes and Atkinson not in squad. Root captain.

Jofra and Cox added to the squad
Says an awful lot about Harry Brook right now - there's no way they could suspend the current captain for alcohol-related misadventures, then give the job to the bloke who only received a fine for alcohol-related misadventures.

Interested to see the makeup of the team for The Oval. Losing 7 & 8 from the batting line up might force them to bring Rehan in as spinning all rounder at 7

Duckett, Gay, Bethell, Root (c), Brook, Smith (w), Rehan, Robinson, Tongue, Archer, Baker

Harsh on Bashir, but you cannot go into this test with Robinson at 7

Alternatively it's Rew or Cox at 6, with Smith going back to 7 and a 4 man pace attack (Bethell/Root as spinning options)

I reckon Cox will come in

Did Stokes and Atkinson actually break the curfew?

Does it last all summer long, or just during matches? Or does it last until the scheduled end of a match? Has this been said?

There are other matters here, but that's all you read. So it would be interesting to know.

If they do know that is.

That's the question for me. Someone on twitter suggested they would be staying at the team hotel that night/morning so it was acceptable to assume the curfew was in place at that time. It's fair to say that none of this would be happening if the curfew was no longer in place

Curfew or no curfew, none of this would be happening if they'd got any brain cells. 35 year old men don't need curfews to tell them what's right and wrong.
