I watched the toss and both Stokes and Latham wanted to bowl first because of the conditions. The pitch may have played a part as it's set up like Wimbledon now. They cover it over and seal it then smoke it (I think) that sends smoke down into the soil so it plays better. Personally watching it. I thought it looked more like a mat than a pitch.
Yes,it's steam they send under the pitch cover. I've no idea what it does to the grass,but,you're right,it looks more like some sort of cork matting.
Makes it difficult for amateurs like me to understand.....when you have 16 wickets fall in a days play....is it the pitch,the atmospheric conditions including the stop start nature of the weather....or just good bowling and/or ****e batting? Confused.com.
No surprise to see Robinson bowl like that on that pitch. He's always done it, and handy for him to bowl so late on as his second spell is usually slow and poor. He should go well again today after a rest.
Had his application been better, and England had taken notice of what works in Aust now, he would have been there for the last Ashes and probably been the top wicket taker.
Why though, on a pitch like that, did almost every batsman stay back in his crease? Worth a step forward normally, especially after the first couple went down and the rest could see what was happening.

the fact so many got out leaving the ball suggests the slope has been in play, it is very pronounced but you cant see if well on TV - a few did nibble back.
Lack of bounce in that pitch is criminal as well. Supposed to be one of the best surfaces in the country.
Agree,lack of bounce is surprising,ball keeping low.
Hope Emilio doesn't **** this up.....he deserves a big score.
Trouble with Lord's is that it needs re laying, but they play so much cricket there they can't find the time.

Well apparently it's not a good time to do it.
I think they need Spring onwards for a couple of months. Durham did this once. I think they might have even played a couple of games away really early on. Not an option for Lord's.
Think they were talking once about doing one half one year and the other half next year. We'll have to wait and see!
