I watched a fair bit of the ashes, don’t remember them putting together any major partnerships that got England off to a flyer, if anything Englands innings were getting off to slow starts, and I remember particularly in the early tests Root and Stokes had to hold the innings together, as usual. I admit I’ve not seen as much of this series but it looks a similar story on the stats and scorecards

In this series with India, the highest opening partnership between these 2 has been 84 and next highest has been 59. In the ashes it was 91 and 79. Are these good numbers for an opening partnership? No 100+ partnership seems weak to me?

The ashes numbers are really bad when you think about it. So as a partnership they reached 91 once and the next highest score being 79, so in 9 out of 10 innings that series England never managed to reach 80 without losing that 1st wicket

India four down and still trail by over 200, England in the driving seat.

Lead only 46 after Indian tail added lots. What target do we think England need to set to win?

These two usually get us an opening partnership of at least 50 and one of them usually stays in to see us to around 100/1. That’s a solid start that we often have. For years we were about 9/2 after 3 overs with Root at the crease having to save us.

I get that its also the way England play now, the whole Bazball thing, so early wickets can be a part of that. Coming to play India though, do you not think you need two solid openers in there? A pairing that not necessarily need to rack up a score early doors, but just weather the early storm that you know is coming from the bowlers, stick around and take your singles when they come, rotate the strike. Today again they are 19/1 then next ball 19/2 and the pressure goes down the order, all out for 145.

That was my sort of comparison to Cook and Strauss, I'm not saying they need to be Cook and Strauss but those 2 knew how to frustrate a bowling attack, could hang around for hours just chipping away at a score but then also take their chances when they came.

Well that was awful, the pies at the end allowing India to knock off 40/0 were the icing on a **** cake

At the time of writing it was true, they then failed to finish off India with the ball and had a disastrous bat.

After the capitulation in the last test looks like we will be meekly rolled over in this one.

T20 World Cup 2024 starts in just under 3 weeks. Lots of T20 friendlies/series going on till then.

Pakistan just wrapped up a series win 2-1 v Oirland. Oirland gave a good account of themselves.

Scotchland v Oman presumably rained off.
