day 2 in the ccc

gloucester recovered a bit. they were 5/3, 8/4, 24/5, 32/6, 45/7, and 89/8. the last two wickets added 71 each to give them 231. number 9 tom price scored 109.

worcester went in and opened with a 58 stand. the over after that stand ended, tom price took a hat-trick. he currently has 4-38 and worcester are 118/7.

Cricket in April. Can't beat it <laugh>

Although tbf there are plenty of runs being scored elsewhere

bit of a mismatch in a test, just finished, ireland on tour in sri lanka in the second game of the series. sri lanka are not the team they were, so rebuilding going on with new blood, etc, etc.

nevertheless, it looked like a batting pitch. ireland won the toss and batted first. they made 492 from 145.3 overs in five sessions with partnerships of 143 and 99 on the way, and scores of 80, 95, 103, and 111. one sril lankan bowler took 5 for 174 off 58.3 overs.

sri lanka batted for six and a half sessions before declaring halfway through the evening session on day 4. in 151 overs - only 5.3 more than ireland lasted - they scored 704 for 3 with scores of 205, 115, 245, and 100no, and partnerships of 228, 268, and 133.

that left ireland 212 behind with three and a half sessions to bat out. they managed 202 runs before they were all out with less than an hour left before tea. sri lanka's chief wicket taker managed 2 for 88 this time round, and other bowlers bagged 3 for 30 and 5 for 64.


in the first match, sri lanka started with 591 for 6 and ireland scored 143 and, following on, 168. two sri lankans have two centuries so far, one of them getting 140 and 245. it was a two-match series.

Yorkshire's poor start to the season continues. Strong batting line up on paper, including Bairstow and Malan bowled out for 106 against Glamorgan. I usually enjoy the cricket, keeps me going while there's no City to watch, but the crap weather so far this year and Yorkshire's form mean I'm already counting down to August!

At least there's the Ashes soon I suppose

a good day for yorkshire, at last. glamorgan started with 245 at headingley and bowled yorkshire out for a pitiful 106. glamorgan's second innings ran and ran. aussie marnus labuschagne (forever to be mispronounced; he said it should sound like La Bus Cagney, but wasn't bothered how people said it) helped himself to 170no from 352/4 dec, leaving yorkshire to score 492 to win. the final session of day 3, after glamorgan's declaration, was washed out with some of the usual weather, essentially leaving yorkshire to bat out the final day. as it happened, yorkshire batted and batted. adam lyth was eventually fifth out for 174 on 325/5, losing his wicket with around 16 overs to play. the next pair put on 52 before two wickets fell on 377. the ninth wicket took the score to 408/9. leaving six deliveries to decide the result. jordan thompson kept the last over out, to top his 55no, and yorkshire ended on 412/9, earning themselves a draw. yorkshire's highest fourth innings score to win a game is 406, so to beat that in an impossible quest is impressive, as is scoring 412 in a day. hoping it bodes well for the rest of the season.

EDIT apologies - the player scoring 55no was jordan thompson, not matthew fisher.

I see Jofra Archer's injury has flared up again, I'm assuming it's the same one. Back home from the IPL early, first test v Aus just over a month away. He's cricket's equivalent of Emma Raducanu, wonder if either of them will ever fulfil their potential.

It's looking that way, both injury prone, it must be terribly frustrating for them both.
 
Archer ruled out for the summer now, Anderson has a groin strain. Doesn't bode well...
 
Tough on Foakes being left out, Bairstow had a wonderful year last year, but with his long layoff and can he replicate that again this year, not so sure.

It is a massive ask. I guess one good thing about Bairstow’s break is that in recovery he has been able to focus on red ball, and not having to adapt to and from different forms in such a hectic calendar, which I don’t think has helped him in test cricket. Also he has been messed around throughout his career, he had made himself into a solid test keeper, who rarely made mistakes. The previous regime dropped him for golden balls, Buttler, and then started moving him up and down the order just to accommodate him, so he spent years around the periphery of the team. There was a lot written about his incredible form last season been down to the new regime making him a part of the ‘inner circle’ within the team, and making him feel valued and undroppable. I hope giving him the gloves reinforces that.

Three players for two places who were all basically undroppable! I think whoever they dropped would n’t have been a bad decision, they just had to go with their own instincts. One good thing (though still curious as to how it will work versus the Aussies) is that the management have stuck to their principles and kept faith with baseball!

I guess bringing him back to the test side against Ireland will give all a chance to see how he has recovered, as always TWT.
