Just made a mug of tea and now tea is being taken in the test match. Isn’t tea marvellous, what’s your favourite type?

17 wickets in the first day, must be some sort of record.

When I left work England were well on top was almost surprised when I got home after doing shopping, but they’ve got form. Still, another Lords century from Broad tomorrow and we are back to well on top.

It’s like the first swallow of summer - the first England batting collapse. Think we’ll still win though…

I think NZ will get a much much better second innings score so we really do need that Broad century. Realistically: if we can get 50 lead should be useful.

No, not even close to being a record.

If you want the record for most wickets in a single day of a Test match, then you need to be looking at the convicts: England v Australia 1888 (Lord’s Day 2) – 27; and the first day record: Australia v England 1902 (MCG Day 1) – 25.

I cannot claim credit for these stats, but the England first innings was the seventh time since the start of 2019 that they have lost all ten wickets for 85 runs or less. In the previous 30 years that only happened eight times.

A classic on the BBC Test Match Special:

New Zealand opener Will Young out to Jimmy Anderson for 1...
Michael Vaughan: “I once had dinner with Will Young – the singer – with The Queen at Buckingham Palace.”
Andy Zaltzman: “What did she cook?”
