Well first, thanks to WMS and Nostalgic for their comments. Nostalgic - I agree about Ellis Short. The thing I was getting at is that the Keegan/Wise situation was Ashley's own error. He has only to look in the mirror for answers. Short has gone down the DoF route, but he's made it clear that Poyet must have last say on a signing, i.e. he hasn't made the same personal error that Ashley did. So if it goes wrong, where does he look? I just think Ashley's problem is the easier of the two to solve. So when I say the future lies with Newcastle, it's a short-term thing. I believe Short will sort Sunderland, but the first problem is identifying the source. It'll take a bit of time, I think.
Is that what quantifies a big club? If they sell your club's knock-off shirts in a market in Benidorm? Chelsea were winning trophies far more regularly than Newcastle were by the way, before Abramovic.
Spot on Bri. Any club could be up there with a Man CIty or CHelsea-esque owner. They brought in these financial fair play rules only to make the rich stronger and the poor weaker. 20 years too late IMO. Where would Citeh and Chelsea be now if those rules had been sanctioned in the birth of the premier league? They'd both be exactly like us and Newcastle (and Newcastle wouldn't have had that lovely success streak under Keegan either). There would be few powerhouses and the league would be much fairer. I also think the national team would benefit as well but don;t really give a **** about them anyhow
We realise that we won't win the title this year but having no doubt that we'll finish second doesn't make us deluded.
****ing fascinating that mind ain't it? Everton above United as well, that's a shock, kind of poo poos the 'we're Leeds we're bigger than anyone' myth as well, don't it.
I know I'm a sad bastard but I could spend hours going through **** like that. There's a lot of younger fans could do with taking a good look through some of it too and learning that the current top clubs haven't always been on top, and that many of the 'little' clubs they look down on are not so little - especially in terms of history. It would also surprise a lot of people to learn that Sunderland broke the world transfer record four times in their history, and we did it twice. We weren't always the poor relations of our London and North-West rivals.
It feels like decades ago that Newcastle were considered one of Sunderland's bogey clubs, you wouldn't believe you had 1 win in 11 years or whatever the ridiculous statistic was not too long ago.
Aye, and 28 years at home. Was same with Everton, they were worse than you but think we've lost 2 in 7 or summat now. In short, no such thing as a bogey club, just sometimes coincidental runs of results. I hope this one stands on it's feet mind, the 5-1 last loss, insane really!
Yeah I've never believed in bogey clubs either but I do think with the derby it was down to an inferiority mentality of some Sunderland players. That's one thing you have to thank Di Canio for, he broke that. Mind there could hardly have been a less worthy adversary than plum Pardew. Now now, let's not become Liverpool fans and re-write history, there has been a certain "over the wall" derby since that Halloween
Big schmig. Big clubs win trophies and we've both won **** all for years. How we still get the crowds we do is remarkable. We're either incredibly loyal or incredibly thick...
Forgot about that one, was that after? Just didn't really register that one, too early in season and we played alright.
Yeah Halloween was first derby after we got back in the prem. 0-1 was first home game (for yous) of the following season. Terrible game really but I'd have savoured it a lot more if i knew that over 3 years later I wouldn't have seen us win one again.
Aye, it's nice to not have that feeling like, it literally sucks everything out of you losing a derby. I've kinda mentally prepared myself for us to lose one this year, at the start of the season I thought the squads were so close that home advantage would be enough for each side, my mind hasn't changed much. I'd rather have a win and a loss than 2 draws mind, cos the euphoria of victory is worth the pain of a loss, if that makes sense? That feeling when you win a derby, that buzzing from your core to every cell in your body, the glow that lasts days, worth a kick in the mouth for I reckon. Lose away though, losing at home is sickening.
It has been great putting the deluded ones in their place over the past couple of seasons and long may it continue..
Yeah spot on, I feel deflated after draws tbh because I spend the week in the build up thinking of the glorious moment we snatch a winner. Win and a loss any day for me too. I fancy us more at your place than ours to be honest, our players really do seem to struggle when the pressure is on, and we suit a counter attacking style far more with the players we have.
Pah! a few million quid, what does that matter? There's no cup for finishing a couple of places above us, otherwise you would have to find some space in your crowded trophy room.
