Are you going to refund all the taxes they paid on top of their NHS contributions? Do the same with drinkers? Obese, takeaway eaters. People there through illegal acts such as joyrider, speeding, driving cars without insurance, tax, MOTs or whilst disqualified?
Having never smoked, I would sort of agree. Smokers, the obese, white middle aged males are all discriminated against in the NHS though. But the anti vax brigade is divided into three. The religious types, the pompous social media believers and the culturally challenged. There is no valid reason not to be vaccinated. Everyone drives on motorways travelling in the same direction and obeying the rules of the road. Sometimes something goes wrong and there is an accident. Accidents are genera preventable. One person driving on the wrong side of a motorway on purpose is criminal. If you choose not to obey the rules of the road, you shouldn’t be driving. If you work in care, you have a duty of care. If you choose not to have the vaccine you shouldn’t be in care.
Should they be forced to be vaccinated against all potential fatal transmittable diseases? The vaccine primarily reduces the harm the infection is liable to cause to the recipient, and some reports suggest that it reduces the risk of transmission. I'd argue that if the safety of the patients is the priority, it is them that need to be offered a vaccination for diseases that are liable to be high risk to them. There's a danger that the wrong message will be played out, if people think being vaccinated means that they themselves are no longer a risk to others. There is also the issue of cross transmission due to vectors other than the breath, as a vaccine doesn't work on clothing.
Don't smokers contribute almost double in tobacco taxes alone than the cost of smoking-related treatments on the NHS every year? Something like £3-6 billion for treatment compared to £12 billion in tax revenues.
A lot of people work in care as it’s the only job they can get. made to pay for their own uniforms So training in their own time and not get paid the mileage they’re due. And often work an extra hour or two unpaid to do the jobs they’ve been given
No. They’re taxes even over 40-50 years doesn’t cover the mri’s medication consultants nurses time etc
Smokers pay far more in taxes than thei4 cost to the NHS. As do drinkers. Something always overlooked by the health fanatics. Druggies however, don't but are still treated.
If the attitude is that smokers shouldn't get universal healthcare, at least abolish tobacco duties so a packet of cigs only costs £3 or less.
I'm very much in the 'Take it if you want, don't take it if you don't ' camp. I don't think anybody should be forced into anything in life! As DMD points out it protects the recipient,no brainer for most of us but carers can still care if their patients are protected and given the current success rates in preventing serious illness amongst the vulnerable I can't see any possible need to enforce it?
It cuts down on those needing hospital treatment and also on the costs to the NHS and stops so many other people having diagnosis and treatments for other things delayed or cancelled. Going by Chazz's logic on smoking maybe people who refuse to be vaccinated should pay for their NHS treatment? Polio, diphtheria, smallpox and other diseases would not have been eradicated if people, or parents at the time, had thought I will please myself.
Or abolish it altogether. The fact they don't suggests they take more on taxes then they spend on treatment. The only thing Hitler, who hated smoking, didn't get his own way on was his wish to ban smoking.
I don't even smoke anymore. Just the idea though that anyone who ever smoked in their life should forfeit their access to universal healthcare is ridiculous lmao.
Having the right to choose, should not be at the expense of someone else's life. Do not want to have the jab, **** off, get another job and take your tabard with you. That's how it is. Want to keep on smoking and get cancer treatment, sorry, stop smoking first. Need two new knee's, lose weight, you fat **** (me) and then we will put you on the waiting list. Life's choices. Some choices are for the good of yourself others for society, its odd but when its for the good of society, that's when people kick up the most.
People already do though, that's what taxes are for. The whole concept of the NHS is universal healthcare paid for by taxation, not an US-style insurance system based on risk assessments of people's lifestyle choices and existing conditions. We either have an NHS everyone can use regardless, or we abolish duties on stuff like alcohol, tobacco, sugary drinks etc.
Same here. Stopped 20 years ago after smoking like a chimney. Any benefit was undone a couple of years later after I inhaled chlorine gas at work and was hospitalised. Still suffer from the consequences of that.
Making access to health treatment dependent on someone's moral judgement of your lifestyle is a slippery slope and I want no part of it. Doctors and nurses and the rest are trained not to judge their patients but to treat and care for them. Anyone who wants to deny other people access to health treatment based on lifestyle had better eat a perfect diet, exercise regularly, never drink, never do drugs, never do any sport, never have sex, drive under the speed limit and basically live the most boring life imaginable.
I’m sure that picture of Minerva was taken by a friend of mine, cracking photographer. He sends me his stuff and I put poetry to it. I wrote one called “ Minny at Minerva “ it’s about an old lady that turns up on a Sunday to sing to the customers. Also “ The Whisper “ is doing really well...
