Know exactly what you mean. Lots of free parking on the local industrial estates and the club lays on a fleet of mini buses to take you to the Stadium of Light for free and back again at the end of the game. Half my work colleagues are Mackems and the others all support Newcastle. Remember Joey Barton winding them up by reminding them of their 5-1 defeat by the Toon a few years ago. The guy could be a tool on the pitch but he knew how to banter with the crowd. My god. Of all the players I wouldn't have called that dark period in our history the Tony Scully era. Actually thinking about it, its apt to conjure up dark memories of the depths we had plunged to.
The game earlier that season was also good when Terry Venables tricked their keeper with his fee kick which Glazier could only push all the way in to the back of the net because he'd come out too far expecting a cross into the box. Mind you we had some good free kicks in those days. Surprised that it took other teams so long to suss out the Venables routine where he lifted the ball over the wall for Francis who was on the end to peel away and volley it in.
To put a dampener on the reminiscences my memories of trips to St James' Park was dire as we lost both times 1-0 not even offering a shot on goal. Mind you it was Hughes, that master of tippy tappy possession football with no end-product and Redknapp who would probably admit that the sum total of his ambition away from home was that we did not lose or lose too heavily. It's a long way to walk up to watch your team not even make an effort to compete.
I remember a game where we lost 1-0 up there just before Christmas. I bought 2 tickets for me and my mate 2 BA fights (£99 each return) and some Travelodge hotel in the centre of town. We were all set and then I fell ill. If Covid was around then... that was it. 3am the morning before we leave, I had to cancel it. If I had gone up there I probably would have been so ill as it was freezing. My Rangers mates who went said I did the best thing as we played crap and it was freezing right up in that corner. That was around Hughes time
That's the one - you got out of gaol there. My son wasn't so lucky. He was at uni in Liverpool at the time and had come home so that I could drive us up from Yorkshire and then put him back on the train on the Sunday. To thaw out.
We aren’t winning today by the way, just to manage expectations. What the **** have Coventry ever given the world? The Specials? The bird who went on horseback naked? A magnet for Nazi bombs? Useless ****s.
Is there a game on today….I never knew. And even if I did I wouldn’t be getting more excited than a virgin bride on her wedding night…no sir eee. Couldn't give a toss
WBA game was massive, and now, seeing that we won, this game is also massive. 3 points today (a big ask) and we are really in touch with the automatics. Swansalona and the Fakes at home to follow!!!!!
Fancy us in the home games. Would be amazing to win today but a point considering their position is no bad thing with home games to come. We’re losing meekly 1-0 anyway.
Did a spin class today and I’m genuinely terrified of the steps to the top of that away stand now. Hopefully someone has gear.
