Somerset and England wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter has announced his immediate retirement from cricket because of an eye injury. Kieswetter broke his nose and damaged his eye socket and cheekbone while batting against Northants last July.

At a time when the paucity of spinners is a matter of profound concern for the England international side, Monty Panesar should be pushing for an England recall. Instead Panesar has endured a troubled start to 2015, leading him to take an indefinite break from the game and seek help with the Professional Cricketers' Association. Panesar has only just turned 33 and is second only to Graeme Swann among England's spin bowlers since Derek Underwood. But even his future as a county cricketer is uncertain. His contract with Essex expires at the end of the summer, and it is understood that Panesar is unlikely to be offered a new deal.
England wicketkeeper Matt Prior has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 33-year-old, who won 79 Test caps, helped England to three Ashes series victories between 2009 and 2013. The Sussex keeper has not played any cricket since July 2014 because of a recurring Achilles tendon injury. "I was expecting to be fit for the 2015 season," Prior said. "Unfortunately, this has proved impossible, and I have now had to reach this decision."
A former cricketer who stole more than £100,000 meant for young players has been jailed for two years. Andy Hayhurst, 52, of Worsley, Greater Manchester spent the money on lavish restaurants and luxury holidays, Manchester Crown Court was told. The ex-Lancashire, Somerset and Derbyshire all-rounder admitted the fraud while working as a £50,000-a-year Lancashire Cricket Board director.
Hampshire's West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards is keen to tie up a longer-term deal with the county. The 33-year-old is currently on a short-term Kolpak deal and is due to return in July after commitments in the Caribbean Premier League.

Batsman Tom Abell has signed a four-year deal with Somerset, his first professional contract with the county. The 20-year-old has become a regular in the Somerset side this season after breaking through in 2014, when he scored 95 on his first-class debut against Warwickshire
