Hmm, after reading that article I don't think it means that Rangel wouldn't be able to play for Wales. For me that means that even if you've no "blood" link to a country, as long as you spent 5 years studying in that home nation (and you posess a UK passport) then you can play for the home nation you studied in. I think the "foreigners gaining residency over 5 years" thing is still the same.
I think this new rule was introduced because people move and take their children with them. If a child has lived somewhere since their were around 10, then they would probably feel like where they live is their home country. But is it fair that some placers can choose their country while others can't. Your friend (if he was good enough) would probably be allowed to play for Jamaica, England or Wales. If he gets the choice, then everyone should get the choice. So if any of you have kids who you think might one day be world class players, them leave Wales and get them educated in a country that has a great football team.
Actually, what if his parents were just working in another country? Does that mean he wouldn't qualify because he was born there? Or maybe they went on holiday when his Mum was pregnant, Does that mean he wouldn't qualify either? I understand the point your trying to make, but where your born doesn't really have any bearing on your nationality.
Who cares! I don't unless Angel comes out and states "I feel I am an adopted welshman and want to play for Wales" Then I might enter the debate. Don't get me started on Vinnie Jones playing for Wales...an absolute joke in my mind. I think this whole debate (and a lot of others on here) is purely down to boredom & restlessness of us fans in this period of football drought (ie summer) ROLL ON 6 Aug to start us get the Frenzy back and then on to the Man City Match....arghhh its just too far away....the days are going by Sooooooo Slowly!!
You're telling me Nottage! I've wanted to do a matchday thread for this game for about a sodding week now, wish time would hurry up! At least a lot of the others on here are in Swansea experiencing it, for me it's hard to grasp the enormity of it until I see them play in the Premiership, I think...
of course there are exceptions where welsh parents are working abroad and the kid is born. that is totally different to anyone moving to wales that was born elsewhere.....this 5 year residence rubbish....sorry you play for your own country where you were born and brought up. there should be no exceptions because they are not picked for their own country, so try their luck with another country, is that the true spirit of representing your country playing for another....dont believe in it and never will.....there is too much of this going on that the country you support has players that was born elsewhere....shocking practice....
Nottage, we're not playing on the 6th it's the Championship, Leagues 1 and 2 that start then. Premier league begins on 13th but we don't get under way until the 15th because we're live on Sky
Technically yes Rangel could qualify on residency after I think 5 years. However it's a very grey area as the 4 home nations have a gentlemans agreement not to invoke residency rules like this because of the obvious worry that any Welsh player on the books of an English side as a kid would qualify for England. The fact we have a UK passport also clouds things as technically I think anyone who gains a UK passport can represent any UK nation, or at least that is what the courts would decide if put to them.
Only partially in jest, I'm sure I read that somewhere, and I'm sure he has a "Jack" tattoo on his arm... assumed it was for one and the same reason!
lol, how right you are, would any self respecting decent player want to be associated with that shower at this moment in time.
aber we agree on something. as a proud Welshman i dont wnt to be represented by non welsh players that come through the back door....and i would go further that all countries should be managed by their own nationalities, its all false otherwise....
You are wrong as we ARE playing on the 6th. I never mentioned that the 6th was our first Premiership match. If you read my post you will see that I stated "ROLL ON 6 Aug to start us get the Frenzy back and then on to the Man City Match". As we play Real Betis on the 6th my statement is correct. Sounding a bit "plastic" there Dilligaf ...lol...only joking Supporting the swans in my view includes the pre- season friendlies (wed 3rd and Sat 6th aug). I only mentioned the 6th as I can't make the wednesday game due to work. <bugger !>
So why not take it further and only allow teams like Swansea to have players from their immediate vicinity. Having a Spanish player play for Wales or play for Swansea is exactly the same thing. It's just a player playing for a football team. Also, what about cases such as a 10 year old boy moves from abroad to Swansea with his family for work reasons and the family love the area. The sons ends up a fanatic Swans supporter and even learns Welsh. He now even considers himself to be Welsh because he loves the place so much. He also turns out to be an excellent footballer and Wales want him to play for one of their youth teams. Why would you deny him that opportunity. If may not be possible for him to play for his home country because it is too far to travel for training, playing, etc. To me it seems heartless to deny a kid like that an opportunity to represent Wales. Also, you have an overly simplistic view of the world where you think everyone is born and brought up in one place. Many children are brought up in multiple countries due to their parents work and other reasons. It's often not clear where they are from. Their lives are more global in nature.
