Some bits I've been thinking about during this crisis, thoughts welcome;

PPE, why do we not have washable protective aprons, or wipe down ones, rather than wasteful one use plastic?

Why are our industries not switched to manufacturing the items we need like NOW, it would aid employment, the economy and ensure we have what we need?

Why did the government not make an appeal for furlough employees or volunteers to help with fruit picking (with no penalty clauses), but all paid work, again aiding temporary employment, economy and giving ppl the oppotunity to get out?

Did the government make use of the million volunteers?

We often hear of the war time spirit for everyone to muck in, but I'm not seeing it, it seems to me there is a lack of manufacturing, workers and essential items for the NHS....it's crazy when there are probably loads of people who are looking for excuses to be able to do something useful.

It's like having a front line army without arms, it's like having reserves asleep in the trenches.

Ok, I'll shut up now.

With the PPE I suspect it is because you can't 100% guarantee that a wipedown eliminates the virus completely.

That said it would still be better than no PPE and the distribution, or rather lack of it, to care homes, borders on being a war crime.

Re the volunteering thing...I volunteered 10 days ago with my local borough and cos I have clear DBS (the full criminal record check) I got accepted but still haven't been given anything to do.
Think they are over whelmed with volunteers tbh and they are trying to set it up safely so con artists or abusers don't get sent to peoples homes.

Yeah, I volunteered, logged in twice now with the app. Not been given anything to do yet, but had an email saying basically what you just said there.

The care home thing is scandalous. The cherry on the cake was, instead of providing PPE they came up with the ridiculous idea to produce badges with “Care” on them for care workers to wear and charge them £1.50 per badge.

and referring back to my questions, re the scenario you have given, no DBS would be required for farm work. It's crazy we have ppl begging for things to do, paid or unpaid.

Please tell me they are not really charging for the badges? <grr>

Yup I can see what you are saying, but what did we do before plastic aprons. I thought if we learned anything from this virus it was to change the way we think and do things, we seem to be failing on both.

Ok, I'll shut up now.

The main PPE shortage is the overall type smocks (that I think are paper based) that cover the arms etc and tie round the back, and provide full protection for those on COVID wards. They’re now asking for these to be reused or to just use the plastic pinny type things that don’t cover the arms instead.

Hancock said they’ll have another 55,000 of them by Friday, which I read was about 8 hours national supply. So yeah why not try and get the manufacturing industry to help out? Or maybe they should have seen this coming a month back and asked then.

My daughter is front line and is only getting the plastic pinny things, she’s complained it’s not safe and the answer was ‘we haven’t got anything else’.

I was surprised that there were so few role for volunteers that did not require a DBS as not that many people have them from my understanding (though I could be wrong)
