I hear there is profiteering on hand sanitiser for NHS purchasing. Why can't the government introduce legislation that makes this illegal and that it must only be sold at the cost it takes to make it!?

In these circumstances I am jealous of the countries like China who can simply take the sanitizer as they see fit, for government use. The sad thing is, in our western democracies we must rely on either goodwill or greed to encourage companies to aid the state, while in Saudi Arabia or China, the government can simply order it be done.

Surely if our government can install laws on its people that makes a democracy locked down, then surely the government can requisition these production lines.

I'm sure it can be done. Let's just hope Boris doesn't go all Viktor Orban on us and declares a permanent state of emergency.

The panic mongering never helps. Picking worst case to sew panic/fear is silly.
When things are at their worst, is when your head shout be its coolest.

Also
If you have 7 billion people and a pandemic kills 0.02% no one really bats an eyelid (quite literally)
If you have 60 million people and you lose 10% to a pandemic it's like WOW

0.02% of 7 billion is 140 million people (no one really is concerned)
10% of 60 million is 6 million (everyone loses their mind)

The mortality rate panic is largely just that, pointless fear pan handling at this point.

For me (I mainly think of the poor bastards trying to breathe because that's my POV, I dont work in gov managing masses) it's merely down to helping people who need to breathe, to breathe, and preventing more people needing assistance to breathe though, because we, you and I don't operate on the "overall management level" where numbers matter, you and I are on the human experience level where we should focus on the consequences at our level, ie those around us being ripped up by the virus.

IF.. you bring the cold calculated attitude of dealing with numbers, down to ground level of human experience (worries fears empathy ect) you are going to come off like a sliced pan mate, and I think that's largely why you're not getting any traction.

I've learned that if you take a minute to ponder why others think the way they do rather than trying to ram your view home, it actually goes a long way. <ok>

I prefered Heath Ledger's dialogue in Batman. Was more flamboyant and less wordy <ok>

Jeez that's a big acceleration in the death toll !:emoticon-0106-cryin:emoticon-0107-sweat.

According to this thread we shouldn't concern ourselves with the death toll as it's not high enough to merit concern.

I should specify - some people in this thread.

I was shocked by that number today. I was only thinking yesterday it's doubling every three days, so I expected a high number by the weekend, but it's come a few days earlier and well above what I would have predicted. It was refreshing to look at our figures compared to Italy and Spain, but now it's only a matter of time before we equal their daily numbers, which is concerning we could be topping 800 by the weekend.

France have had similarly large numbers, I was shocked to see they're still producing casualties larger than the UK's daily despite being in lockdown for longer than than most.

To be a little optimistic I believe the NHS, even is underfunded before this crisis, is still one of Europe's better national healthcare services. I'm still under the belief that the UK, France and Germany will not see this spiraling out of control like it has done in Italy and Spain.
