It's the yanks I feel sorry for, apparently it's $3200 just to be tested. Their healthcare system will encourage people to stay away and suffer.

Trump says they’re well prepared, and the insurance will cover it anyway. Also, the economy is in great shape despite the Dow crashing. So it’s all good.

The reaction to this seems to be pretty hysterical, no?

You can always rely on the news media to make a big deal out of something like this.

On the other hand, little is known yet about the effect of the disease on humans. We do know that it is highly infectious and there’s no vaccine.

The Chinese and Italian authorities have certainly taken it seriously. Time will tell if the traditional British response of putting the kettle on and pretending it’s not happening, may in the end prove more appropriate.

The issues as I understand them, are that there’s no current vaccine, it’s highly infectious and as with all viruses there’s the danger of mutation.

It’s basically flu though isn’t it? Not bubonic plague.
Well yeah, and on the basis of what it currently is, and it’s apparent mortality rate it doesn’t seem to be as big a deal as it’s being made out to be.

However, I think the medical profession are always frightened of new highly infectious viruses, which they don’t fully understand and therefore don’t have vaccines for, as there’s always the danger it could develop into something far more serious. That explains the caution imo.

I don't think it's just caution though, it's hysteria.

Not really. If you contain the virus it won't spread and remain active. As Tobes said it could also mutate into something nasty, I'd rather people gave a **** instead of ignoring it and pretending it's not happening.

I have spent most of my life pretending the bad stuff isn’t happening, or just hoping it goes away.

Works about 50% of the time.

Would this stop anyone here travelling?
I'm supposed to be going to the Canaries on the 10th in two minds now.Just my luck.

If they quarantine you in a hotel do they mean the resort, or literally stuck in ye room. Firstly, if you're sick you would probably wanna sit in bed anyway, but if you didn't have symptoms AND had access to the pool and bar, I could manage.

I might be slightly reluctant because of the risk of being forcibly cooped up in my hotel. Wouldn’t be remotely bothered about getting the virus, personally .
That's my worry.....Going with her son his wife and their 3 under 10's.

We were stuck in Portugal for a week during the ash cloud thingy in 2010. Insurance paid for it. Wasn’t bad.
