Pretty sure I lifted a new TV from Tesco in the sales and never gave my details for it.

I sent them a letter a few years back saying I was cancelling my licence, they sent me back a letter saying no problem we’ll check with you again in a couple years, which they did. I just sent them a reply saying my circumstances hadn’t changed and I received another letter saying we’ll check in two year. That’s it.

A lot of people don't even realise that you're not obliged to let them in. Mental really.

What year is that 1/10 stat from, and how many resulted in convictions? Seem to remember there being a big thing about a fair percentage not getting anywhere in recent years though I can't remember the details.

I'll stand by my theory that you're very unlikely to be caught unless you're a moron if that's all the same with you. I've never known anyone personally prosecuted for it, and probably know about 5-10 people who actually pay it.
You can believe what you like, it’s of absolutely no consequence to me. The facts are, that circa 94% of households pay, and there’s court cases that run well into 6 figures every year for evasion.

When I was in my early youth, I let the fookers in. It was ok though, I think we only had about four channels in them days, defo no CH5. I was young and couldn't be asked with needing a TV. Got a knock at the door, it was the TV Licence people, said I didn't have one (TV). They asked if they could check, I had nothing to hide, so no more than10 seconds in the house and they looked in and then fooked off.

Yep. Never let them in and never tell them your name. The letters I get from them are still addressed to ‘The Occupier’

So a hundred thousand odd people are morons? I've no difficult in believing that really. There well over a million households without one so I still make that roughly ten per cent go to court, though not all convicted.

Anyway this had gone a bit off topic and I'm not really arsed in having a drawn out debate over it. My original point is that people clearly do have a choice whether to pay it or not. Chief clearly doesn't think it's another Netflix and wasn't talking about a legal argument.

It's even easier these days with streaming services, you don't even need anything plugged into the aerial socket.

I’ve got the fire stick running on the WiFi. I should get the aerial taking out, good idea that.

Must admit, I've always paid my licence when I've had a TV, just can't be asked with the hassle.

My BBC comment turned into TV License wars.

lol.

here’s something to cheer you all up:

A British student who travelled to Syria to join the Islamic State (IS) group has been killed in the prison where he was being held.
