If you live alone you should isolate yourself for seven days and don't leave your home. If you are a member of a household you should isolate everyone for fourteen days and not leave the home. ( Except to exercise but don't have any contact with anyone else. ) In theory, it would take the first person infected seven days to recover and up to seven days for the rest to get infected, hence the fourteen days. If you need food or any other essentials you have to get someone else to bring them to you. Don't get me started on the news coverage. Sky cover it like it's transfer deadline day and try to get the breaking news swish up every five minutes. I can no longer watch it. I was walking the dog with a woman this afternoon who said her mum ( 77 ) was scared ****less from watching the news. She has locked herself away and won't allow anyone near her except her daughter.
Well, fingers crossed then. Seems like the government, which I have every sympathy for in this nightmare scenario, is trusting the public to be sensible. In the light of the panic buying I’m not so sure this will work, but perhaps the fear will prove more effective than common sense. Seems clear now that the approach is driven by NHS capacity, and that’s fair enough. I heard something from a medical source today about capacity in another European country that made my blood run cold, mainly because I believe it, and I suspect we won’t be too different here if numbers get out of control. If you look at the wildly different numbers of deaths between countries it seems that ability to ventilate - kit and trained staff- rather than the ‘deadliness’ of the virus is the critical factor for the vulnerable. First (healthy) patients injected with potential vaccine in initial trial in Seattle. When this is all over we need a serious inquiry into the behaviour of the media. It’s disgraceful.
I picked up a fella in the cab tonight. It was only a five-minute ride but this is the general gist of his rant ... He just had dinner with someone quite high up in the NHS. ( I can't remember the position ... Secretary? ) He said that the government is massively overreacting to the situation due to media and social media pressure on what's happening elsewhere on the continent, despite the advice of the eminent medical advice. He said it's going to unnecessarily bankrupt the country. I have no idea who the fella was or what industry he represents but he had a nice big house just off of the Kings Road in Chelsea. He was really pissed off. I usually get to coerce what profession or industry they're in but the journey wasn't long enough this time.
Hi Staines & a great job your doing, my wife has COPD is she vulnerable to it & dangerous if she gets infected by the virus?
Have not been on this post before. All this news coverage is doing my head in, what or who do you believe? I remember all the bull*hit with leaving the EU. I'm am doing more or less the same as what I normally do, although I wash my hands for longer and avoid contact etc. I'm 65, diabetic type 1 and various other issues that I am on medication for. I'm still going down the pub and my club everyday for several pints of cider. My partner is 69 and my Dad is 98, both take no medication at all.
Piers ****ing Morgan still undermining the Government's efforts and banging on about false information before the gulf war etc. What a prick!! I am self employed and simply have to go to work this week.
Didn't hear Johnson, but Radio 5 just said again that those in an infected household should not go out for 14 days, even to buy essentials. This is a massive change in emphasis even from the weekend just gone, when my pal whose son almost certainly has the virus (not tested, but classic symptoms) was told by 111 that the rest of the family should continue as normal. As you say, it's an invitation to stockpile. Seems that the herd immunity thing has been well and truly abandoned. Johnson's asking people to stay away from pubs, restaurants, theatres etc. without actually directing them to close - meaning that they aren't covered by insurance - is plain wrong. I will continue to support my local.
There are little things we can all do like that. Silly example but ordering delivery direct from a restaurant rather than via Deliveroo will see 100% rather than 75% of the price go direct to them. The missus’ sister is an actress. God knows what will happen to the Arts generally after Boris’ choice to protect the insurers instead. Would love to hear anyone defending that move compared to Macron’s announcements yesterday. I’m not getting political, of course.
Theatres up and down the country, from the West End to smaller provincial ones are going to go out of business unless helped by the government. I'm self-employed and I have no idea whether I'm going to receive any help or not. Things are going to get very dire.
Johnson says that the economy 'will come roaring back' after this crisis, but is offering little or no help to businesses and individuals such as yourself severely affected by it right now. Not good enough. If we could bail out the banks in 2008, we can do the same now for the travel, hospitality and entertainment sectors, plus the self-employed and those on zero hours contracts.
Just heard David Milliband (I know, hold your fire) on a variety of issues, but saying something which I think is self evidently true - some countries have buried their true statistics on the virus or are simply unable to collect any. He quoted the US and China. Ten minutes earlier the bloke from Imperial College who provided the government with the modelling which has resulted in the new advice said that it was based on the information from China. Even without Milliband I would have had grave suspicions about this. What a cluster. Now Fergus Walsh, BBC ‘Medical Corespondent’ is on, scaremonger in chief, for weeks he has been using inflammatory language to describe what’s going on, often inaccurately, and today he has said that it will take a decade to develop a vaccine, which is outright bollocks. Fergie has no medical or scientific background, and appears to have forgotten his ‘journalistic philosophy’: When describing how he approached stories on sometimes sensitive topics, Walsh argued that 'To avoid scaring people, the script is crucial – it has to be balanced. I want to look back, six months from now, and not cringe at our stories'. He has also said that in general, 'You have to keep a certain emotional distance from the events in front of you; otherwise it would be impossible to report objectively. You can care deeply about whom or what you are covering, but you must not let your feelings cloud your judgement or prevent you from being an independent observer. On controversial topics, you have to play devil's advocate and ask people direct and often difficult questions'. I suspect his time in the spotlight has given him Keunssberg Syndrome, the delight in chaos if it means you get your face on the telly constantly, and the irresistible urge to contribute to fear and panic because it ensures you will continue to be in the spotlight. Cure: permanent involuntary self isolation. Just heard from my son the builder who shares a house with a lot of his workmates and the owner of the company he works for. Still working, but they have prepared for lockdown by getting rather a lot of beer in and some board games.
An astute comparison to deadline day mate. Totally agree its 24hrs of breaking news. So many bloody specialists and experts talking about nothing. Shortly they have an expert on talking about the effects of being at home isolated and working FFS! They thrive on this crap because Brexit news is done. Let’s see who many experts they bring in when we all start cancelling Sky sports due to no football?
I think it was a bit of a silly comment but it is no different to what Macron said the other day. We are just 2 weeks behind the rest. They will announce closers soon enough. However agree I have many friends in the industry that are fuming.
Don’t think it has. This will still be the unofficial way to slow it down. Yesterday the government were knocked for six with the latest modelling results and acted immediately. They are now trying to suppress.
Tbh sounds like the kind of bloke who won't care if tens of thousands of old or sick people die from the virus, just so long as his business remains unaffected.
As for Macron and what he said.... I thought it was a fab thing to do and when I discussed with my French friend.... he is still laughing today. I think our government get a lot of stick for something beyond their control.
Don't be impatient! That can't be put in place overnight, Chancellor of the Ex making a statement today
She is far.more vulnerable to it and imho, should do what she can to go on ‘social isolation’. The problem is that doing that is extremely difficult and only works to some degree.....You’ll go out, could get infected and then in turn might infect her. It’s an extremely difficult situation.
