I know a number of people with long COVID, as well. One is about five years younger than me (so, ~30) and got it long before the variants were a worry. She is doing better now, which is to say that she can climb a flight of stairs without doubling over for lack of breath. It took nearly a year to get there, and she doesn't really expect to ever have the level of activity she had previous. From a fitness standpoint, she's 30 going on 70. We're really not going to understand the final toll of this until well after. My first jab wasn't a whole lot of fun for a couple days, and I fully expect that my second jab will be significantly less fun. But I'd do it a thousand times over to prevent the people I know from wondering whether they'll ever be able to live something like a normal life again.
Some paper are reporting that it now looks like some form of restrictions will now remain in place until the spring amid reports that the recent set of data is extremely concerning.
I agree with that, but think it also applies to the effects of lockdown, as in it's not just about the missed cancer diagnoses etc but many people's lives have been set back years by it. The problem we've got (and I've maintained this all along) is that we won't truly know the cost of this pandemic for years and years to come, so any course of action is a gamble to an extent. I've seen both sides. I've seen people lose loved ones and know one in particular suffering with long covid. I've also known, indirectly, people who have lost their jobs and homes and ended up committing suicide. I've been lucky in that I've been able to work throughout (though I've done > 400 hours unpaid overtime since last March which probably contributed to my MH deteriorating In January) as I'd have been completely ****ed otherwise with rent to pay and no family who would have taken me in. It probably would have meant not seeing my Son as much (or at all) which would bring further issues. Many people aren't in that situation though (and the young and ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected) and have lost jobs/homes. An extremely good friend of mine is one of those people and has ended up reusing hard drugs after being clean for 4 years. That's not to look for sympathy for him btw, but to make the point that his plight isn't likely to be included in any statistics. And to take that further I'd argue that many of the effects are lockdown are actually hidden from society, with what we know about only scratching the surface. As @Saints Fan4Life says we were right to protect the NHS but people need to understand that it's heading for another huge crisis right now.
Spring? Sorry but that's completely mental. May as well close every pub down now and terminate all their employees contracts as there's no way the hospitality sector can survive that long on limited custom.
What good does it do Boris, Nicola or any other leader of a country to impose restrictions unnecessarily which have a negative impact on the economy ?
I’ve said before about my friend, the retired GP, who still isn’t fully fit after contracting Covid last summer. That would be bad enough, because he’s my age, but his 22 year old son is still seriously ill with long Covid, 9 months after catching the virus from his dad. This virus has to be stopped in its tracks.
Watching Andrew Marr who quoted PHE saying of 42 people who contracted the delta variant more than two weeks after their second jab 14 died. Not good news and highlights the failure to red list India earlier as many commentators say. Vaccine complacency not an option.
I don’t believe anyone is being complacent, most of us are being compliant, just some can respect the views that other have a choice and others can not respect that choice of the individual.
Personal choice is of course to be respected, as long as it doesn’t damage the community you’re living in or society at large.
You don't believe anyone is being complacent? Really? I've seen plenty of old ****ers not giving a ****. Why are you banging on about choice and lack of respect? Nothing in my post about individual vaccination decisions. Don't be ignorant and post out of context.
Read the post properly. Ive said nothing out of context and I’m far from ignorant. suggest you put me on ignore as I’m not interested in the twisted bollocks you spout so won’t be responding to you again.
Sorry if I offended sweetie. As I say nothing in my post about lack of respect for choice so out of context. Using the language you do certainly goes down as ignorant twisted bollocks as you so succinctly put it. To early on the "source" again? I'll ignore your ignore suggestion and carry on posting as I see fit. Have a pleasant Sunday and enjoy the match.
You could do likewise though. If you did, I'm aware that you would be joining a group of people on here who have! Whilst your determination and relentlessness is to be applauded, certain people just aren't worth wasting your time over.
You wont get a rise by trying to wind me up. Thanks Brendy, funnily enough the lovely Mrs Billy said exactly the same thing! I think someone is trying to be antagonistic, and will follow your advice
This is the only common sense response to this third wave. Should this statistic be indicative of hour potent the delta variant is after two vaccinations, this is suggestive that , we should be going back to a lockdown. If there is 33% mortality after a second jab, this would be catastrophic. I would have thought that something must be skewing this data. The BBC is reporting this morning that hospital admissions are rising and that a figure of 2000 admissions a day is still possible. This is apparently twice the level for respiratory infections during a bad winter. Currently 5% of infections are resulting in hospitalisation which is half the level experienced previously when the vaccine roll-out was in it's infancy. The upsetting thing would be for the vaccination programme to be undermined. Got to say that the failure to quickly add India to the red list and refer travel arrangements by three days has facilitated this. Travel to India should have been curtailed immediately and I think all foreign vacations need to be banned. Foreign travel needs to be limited to essential visits only. I think that blame for this third wave rests with the government as it was too late to react again. If they do not make a brave decision this afternoon, I think the situation will only get more serious. The government should be looking to impose more restrictions and not lessen them. A short, sharp lockdown is necessary now so that the problem does not become insurmountable in the winter.
You want more restrictions? Wow. I guess you're either retired, or fairly well off financially? Actually, don't rise to it ... don't rise to it ... and I'm gone.
