Costa del Sol property firms owned by Goldsmith family ordered to pay €24m in unpaid taxes and fines.
The luxury villa where Boris Johnson stayed on holiday last month is linked to Costa del Sol property businesses owned by Zac Goldsmith’s family that engaged in a multimillion-pound tax evasion scheme, according to Spanish courts. The tax authority’s findings have been upheld by one of Spain’s highest courts, with judges agreeing the companies effectively engaged in a deliberate effort to evade tax and committed “serious” violations of the law.
Meanwhile, the two Goldsmith companies investigated by tax authorities appear to be in financial jeopardy. Both were placed into voluntary insolvency in 2019. Documents suggest that by April last year, as a result of the dispute, they owed more than €20m to their biggest creditor: the Spanish state.

Imagine if we'd had a statesman leader hosting COP26, working tirelessly behind the scenes, using his/her diplomatic skills and the UK's unsullied international prestige to charm, persuade and cajole disparate interests to come together. Imagine.

The UK government does not expect the pandemic to be over for at least another year and in a worst case scenario lockdowns could be needed until 2026, according to the i newspaper.

It said officials are working to three scenarios of how the pandemic might play out - optimistic, middle and pessimistic.

Under some pressure I have been to Bicester Village retail outlet a few times when in England. It is one of those places selling goods with well know labels at what are supposed to be discounted prices. The thing you notice straight away is that it is swarming with Chinese shoppers who have been bussed in from London, Oxford, Brum etc. Before coronavirus there were concerns that Brexit would stop many going and spending their money, and reading this article shows how the combination of factors has left the UK tourist industry on its knees.

Not a post you can ‘like’. Thank you.
It’s a sad state of affairs that this doesn’t shock.

If Goldsmith et al faced a ten stretch for this, it would be far less likely to happen. Or is deterrent only for commoners?

The UK threw away more than 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine after the life-saving jabs were allowed to pass their expiry date, The Independent can reveal.
In what has been described as an “absolute scandal”, the government failed to donate the doses to poorer countries struggling to access Covid vaccines – despite previous promises to redistribute supplies that were deemed surplus to requirements in the UK.
The doses were no longer needed in Britain after the decision was made in May to stop offering the AstraZeneca vaccine to younger age groups because of concerns over rare blood clotting.
This left an excess of vaccines, 604,400 of which eventually expired in August before being destroyed at the end of the month,

An excerpt from Boris Johnson's 'keynote speech' at the CBI's annual conference this morning.

How on earth he ever become an MP, never mind Prime Minister, is surely one of life's mysteries.

    BBC now reporting this:

Senior Downing St source says “there is a lot of concern inside the building about the PM....It’s just not working. Cabinet needs to wake up and demand serious changes otherwise it’ll keep getting worse. If they don’t insist, he just won’t do anything about it."
    Laura Kuenssberg

This is exactly the same type of briefing that got rid of Thatcher.

His absent minded bumbling professor persona has run its course and is now an embarrassment to Britain

At the risk of the this whole Watford board imploding I think I would actually prefer to see Priti Patel replace him as I can't see anyone else that could bully the cabinet the way Thatcher did and get some work done

Even worse there is no one in the party I have voted for since I was 18 that even deserves to be in the commons let alone government

The Labour Party is no better, Keir Stammer is just a hind site waste of space and two thirds of the British public would not tolerate a union backed hard line left wing leader

Go wash your mouth out with soap - carbolic, coal tar, regular, I don't care - just do it now and never utter a syllable in support of that nasty piece of work ever, ever, again. That woman should be in court, possibly behind bars, not in Parliament. Hateful, spiteful, vile. Not fit for office. Ghastly creature.

Can't disagree with your opinion about Starmer, he's bloody hopeless. We're in the do-doo big time: a government clearly unfit for office on so many levels and a woefully ineffective opposition that gives no confidence to their ability to govern.

If only John Smith could rise from the dead...

Steady on I was merely showing who in the current cabinet is better than BoJo

The main point being that the three main parties would struggle to form a government between them

I have always voted Liberal but can no longer find anyone to vote for in there

At least we are united in football
