Guess who will be bearing the brunt of the cost of the UK government's new yacht? Apparently pensioners are all doing very well and don't need the rise promised in 2019. https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk...mes-2021-06-19/?taid=60ce7824ab06fd0001473405
Hmm. I presume only UK based fans will be allowed to go Or they will relax the restrictions on travelling abroad ? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57546042

So what has changed to lose the UK the advantage it had by starting vaccinations earlier? The obvious one is that due to someone wanting to go on an ego trip, the borders were left open to the Indian varient. When you see Portugal in second place it should not be forgotten that the country opened up briefly to holiday makers from the UK and held a football match attended by thousands of UK fans. The dominant strain in Portugal now is this same Indian variety.
It’s all political to appease UEFA and save the “embarrassment” of losing the big games . Then the Government can blame football and other sports fans for a new wave of COVID.
Apologies that this is related to football as well as COVID, but I think this Scottish data is very interesting https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-57580118. If it's reflected in England, I would expect to see a big spike in rates among young men over the next couple of weeks. I'm not really surprised by this, seeing how my 20something neighbours regularly have houseparties and my colleagues of a similar age are going out and essentially behaving as usual, other than wearing masks in shops and on the bus.
The government have just added to the holidays green list “British Antarctic Territory”, where it’s currently -63’C but feels like -85’C.
On its front page El Pais announces that 1 Mallorca is the new Delta hotspot and that thousands of students have become infected, so that internal flights to Mallorca are immediately halted; 2 the UK has made Mallorca a green listed destination. A lot of Brits will be sent home early if they get there.
So some are trying to put the blame on the Chinese government? They should be looking at the top of their own first... And if MPs think they shouldn't be bugged, it might help if they weren't such corrupt buggers themselves.
I for one would go.... Hurtigruten do an expeditionary cruise there ...with complimentary Parka jacket...!
Very restrained of our Elton I think. Are there any industries that they haven't thrown to the wolves? https://www.theguardian.com/music/2...-elton-john-outraged-as-brexit-hits-musicians
So Frosty the no man when quizzed, says that despite him turning down the EU offer to allow touring groups to perform around Europe, it is nothing to do with him, and the Ministry for Culture will have to sort it out. It is little wonder that Elton failed to get this failure to understand what he has done.
I'm not too sure about Johnson's plan to allow full attendances at football matches - there's something not quite right about the decision. I very much doubt that neither he nor anyone involved with his government were unaware of this study into the effects of Covid on the brain, yet here he is, ploughing ahead with plans that will more than likely increase the number of infections. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1406726553690595332.html "This is a robust study that shows significant change in brain structure, and thinning of grey matter in memory, smell and taste associated brain regions post-COVID-19. We should be concerned. This is not a virus we should be happy to expose anyone to." This suggests that the focus should not be so much on the number of deaths, but on the number of infections because of the probable long-term damage to the brain - such as psychiatric disorders and early onset dementia. Yet Johnson is happy to announce that cases could rise to 50,000 a day this month and we should reconcile ourselves to having to live with it? "The study found significant reduction in grey matter in certain parts of the brain- especially those associated with smell, and memory." Which may explain why Johnson isn't too worried, he really doesn't appear to have much in the way of grey matter anyway.

I think we can be certain of one thing. There will be a lockdown or restrictions brought back in at some point and probably by the end of Autumn. This has the feeling of a soap being handed out or caving in to those who say it’s unfair that thousands can go to Wembley or Wimbledon but others cannot go to a school sports day/wedding etc .. And those people probably have a valid point.
Portugal opened up to British holidaymakers. Portugal now has 2,000 new cases of the Delta varient each day. Portugal reimposing restrictions on the population to try and stop it spreading. England has 32,500 new cases of the Delta varient each day, and forecast to be 50,000 per day shortly. England lifting all restrictions so that it can spread further. Whitty: we will get more long covid, particularly in the younger ages. Wenham: millions of cases over the summer isn't the time to be abandoning all safety measures. Walport: 5-10% of people will end up with long covid. France is advising people not to travel to Spain or Portugal for holidays because of the Delta varient. The Delta varient here is now trending as the #JohnsonVariant as well as in the UK. State of emergency declared for Japanese capital throughout Olympics amid rise in Covid cases. Up from 714 to 920 in a week. Strange that with dreadful forecasts of where England is going, Johnson has become fed up with showing any leadership and has caved in to the loony element of his party.
An interesting, rather long article, as someone tries to show to her German readers what is going on in the UK. Worthwhile putting it through a translator. Cologne will not need that assistance. https://www.blaetter.de/ausgabe/2021/juli/die-politik-der-luege
