The prime minister has conceded that the government didn’t understand the coronavirus in the “first few weeks and months” of the UK’s outbreak, and admits there were things they could’ve done differently in its handling of the crisis. In an interview with the BBC a year since he took office, Boris Johnson said there were “lessons to be learned” about how it was managed in the early stages of the outbreak. The prime minister also admitted there were “open questions” over whether the nationwide lockdown came too late. The extent to which Covid-19 was being transmitted asymptomatically was underestimated at the time, he added. Maybe he has realised that when compared to some other leaders, that being a bit more honest with the public goes down better than trying to constantly cover up his untruths.
he was very combatative and defensive eh... always trying to look at the positives ahea..... some chinks of acceptance..... I am glad that Kueensberg took the interview to him.... but still a little too matey IMO
France has advised against travel to Spain due to a rise in the numbers with the virus. It is easy to drive across the border without even knowing you have until you start seeing rather strange road signs. I wonder how many from the UK have booked a holiday there and will think twice about going there now? I haven't seen any similar advice given out in England.
My step mother in law flew in from Spain on Monday to visit my brother in law in Wales who has Parkinsons (brother not Wales). His carers who all work in care homes said they would not care for him if she visited. She went back to Spain the next day. I don't know if she new of the new quaratine laws in place for visitor from Spain.
It really does raise the question of how people wander in and out of the country, despite these controls. There are reports of people filling in the required forms to say where they will be staying, yet no one at the airports knows what to do with them, so they just disappear into the country without handing them in. Apart from that, how sad that she was denied the visit. There are so many sad stories at this time.
Even the best of controls can have problems - given that they rely heavily on trust that the public will do the right thing. The Queensland government are finding that right now in spite of their strict regulations regarding interstate travel - they have just had to announce that travel from Greater Sydney is a no go, in addition to the existing ban on travel from Victoria, all thanks to three teenage girls who falsified travel declarations. The three had travelled to Melbourne to attend a party a couple of weeks ago whilst Melbourne was in total lockdown - and returned via Sydney, declaring not have visited Melbourne - simply to avoid quarantine. Unfortunately, two of three developed symptoms and tested postive to the virus last week - and one of those had returned to work the day after returning. As a result, the school she worked at as cleaner had to be closed - 700 pupils, their immediate families and all other staff members have to undergo testing and isolation, as do staff at pubs and restaurants that they visited since returning, along with any friends and family they have had contact with. They are now each facing charges in court that will likely lead to hefty fines and six months in prison - and, I would imagine, the anger of the entire population of Brisbane should an outbreak of the virus happen as a result of their selfish and thoughtless actions.
Let me get this right. If you live in the north west of England, you can no longer meet up with your next door neighbour in his or your garden, but you can meet him in the pub garden along with countless strangers. This is just plain nonsense surely!

Has much be said about all those vulnerable people coming out of shielding from tomorrow? Lots is understandably said about those who cannot wear masks for health seasons but I wonder how much risk there still is for those who won't be protected anymore?
My daughter is vulnerable and lives in Gloucester which was badly hit after Cheltenham went ahead. Her attitude is that if the government got it so wrong over that she doesn't trust them and will continue to stay away from people. She takes the dog for a walk where she doesn't see anyone, but hasn't been to a shop for months. She is lucky that her family do the shopping, but someone living alone might suffer a real fear of going out. With infection rising again you just have no idea if you are coming into contact with a carrier.
Yes I worry for anyone who has to work in retail as I have seen many staff say they won't wear masks etc for their own health reasons and other excuses. Hope she is well and somehow we can all get through this.
All over Europe as restrictions have been lifted in moderate ways, the numbers of infected people has started to rise again. The Office for National Statistics, which is regularly testing households in England, estimates there are around 4,200 new infections a day, compared with 2,800 a week ago. This is a dreadful number, far worse than many other countries that locked down earlier. Prof Chris Whitty, the UK's chief medical adviser, said: "I think what we're seeing from the data from ONS, and other data, is that we have probably reached near the limit or the limits of what we can do in terms of opening up society. The idea floated by Johnson that everything could be fine by Christmas looks more like wishful thinking as every day passes. The country is getting to a point where it will have to decide how much support it can continue to offer to people and business, and set that against the dire state of the economy. It has been suggested that if you want to reopen schools in September, then it may be necessary to close pubs again as an example. All of this will require proper leadership from government and none of the chaotic nonsense seen from them today.
It was only including things that happened to the start of May, three months ago. Have things improved since then? Have we lost the "worst in Europe" record? Why are care homes still saying that they cannot get testing for five weeks for the staff? Why are we telling vulnerable people that they must go back to work just as the number of infections start to rise? We have seen that chaos still is at the very heart of this government, and no things have not improved.
Shielding and a form of lockdown back on? (Well the non shielding process has only just started) https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/news...-to-avoid-second-nationwide-lockdown-12040780
