There are reports tonight that London could go into a lock down similar to the one operating in France. If the rules were similar there is no way that a football match could be played even behind closed doors. I would be amazed if the season is finished by 30th June in any European country.

Yesterday 70,000 people in France were stopped and didn't have their certificate to say where and why they were out and about. They were let off with a warning. No warnings today. The fine went up from €38 to €135, and 4,000+ have had to pay up. It really looks as if most people have taken the measures on board, although there will always be some who think that rules do not apply to them.

The French enjoy breaking rules, this is one way to stop the gilets jaunes.

We watched as Italy tried to control the virus in the north of the country where it was at its worst, only to find that you cannot isolate one part of the country if you still had free movement in other parts. Valuable time was lost before they locked down the whole country. Today all reports suggest that London will go into a lockdown, but which parts? Central London, or right out to the Hertfordshire and other county borders? Is the country being led by people so convinced by their superior knowledge that they don"t wish to learn from the mistakes in others places?

Germany has closed all its brothels (they did this a couple of days ago) - most of the girls working in this trade in Hamburg are from Eastern Europe and are deprived of an income but, because of new border regulations, cannot easily return to their land of origin. The brothel owners of Hamburg are allowing them to live rent free in their places of work (thus showing more understanding of people's needs than the German government has, so far !). I really think that an unconditional basic income must be brought in for cases like this, and for all others who do not fit into the simple pattern of either being workers or employers. There is a whole army of freelancers of all descriptions out there, teachers, translators, musicians etc. etc. who are experiencing the pinch before all others - so far Merkel has offered only hot air and promises.

I thought Germany effectively already had an unconditional basic income - although posssibly inadvertently?

I thought this may be of interest to anyone on here with children, grand-children (or even great grand-children;)) who are facing a lengthy lay-off from school due to the coronavirus. It provides eleven links to live cams of Australian wildlife - in my experience, schoolkids usually find this sort of thing interesting.

I think you'll find that this is not the same BB. For a freelancer to get onto the books of the job centre is very difficult - these rules apply mostly to the registered unemployed. There is also the problem of health insurances in Germany - once a freelancer has moved onto a private health insurance it is very difficult to get back into the normal system. The other aspect of an unconditional basic income is that it is exactly that - and the text shows that there are conditions - also an unconditional basic income is for every citizen, and so would have no stigma attached to it.

That was one of the most incredible UQs we’ve ever seen. Tory MP after Tory MP imploring their own Government to wake up to the scale of the economic crisis that faces the country, individuals and businesses. When this sort of thing happens led by the most right wing members of the Tory Party, you know that the government is either just papering over the cracks or is completely lost as to what to do next. I bet that Johnson never anticipated looking so inept when he bought the gig.

We had a Tesco home delivery last, we are now well stocked with tonic mixers, wine and crisps. None of the essential items were available so will need to go foraging at some point.

Maybe it is about time for you to join with your fellow right wingers and question why your government is failing. They are the only ones who should be getting a grip, not others who do not have power, either on the opposition or government backbenches.

UK businesses are so flexible, Gin distilleries across the UK are shifting production from gin to hand sanitisers. to help combat the COVID-19.

The UK government is doing exactly the right things, taking advice from the medical scientists. It will put in place all of the necessary financial support required. The sensible decisions taken over the last 10 years will put the country in a good position when the recovery happens, unlike other European countries that have run up enormous debts.

So why are the Redwoods, Duncan-Smiths standing up to tell their own government to wake up and get a grip?
