"You expect further measures to be announced." So do I because they will be forced into it, but tonight there are people who have no income, no savings, no food in the cupboard, and it doesn't make any difference to them if they haven't enough money to have a bank account, or does it?
It is funny almost to see Trump sending out cheques to everyday Americans to help them through the crisis, while in the UK they are still thinking about it. It doesn't matter if your politics are left wing or right wing, at the end of the day government is there to look after the people.
That is a really odd response SH. Perhaps you would like to say what the government should be doing tonight to help those who have nothing, and the food bank has run out of supplies.
Even more so if they have been ill. Ben Foster said he was self isolating and got very bored and actually started to eat badly (for a professional like him)
Wow. That is surprising. And I agree, regarding illness. Players may be ill at different times, too. This is a mire.
Ah brilliant.. Because a number of sites are like this.. The Watford Observer too.. So much dross the news content is hard to follow..
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/18/politics-public-covid-19-tobacco-johnson Very well written article by Monbiot, bit depressing though
I wonder what it would take to have a government of national unity that addressed the needs of the entire population...
There is a great deal of truth in the article SH. But it ignores one thing - there is no other western democracy which is coping with this crisis. It could be that democracy itself is not suited for this type of crisis which is why the Asian countries have, mostly, got the peak behind them. When such an epidemic starts in China they have no problem in sealing off whole cities and towns and, if the population objects to quarantine, then a few tanks on the streets makes all the difference. China has had many epidemics in the past and knows that protecting 1.4 billion people is the first priority. A combination of this, and quick mass testing (not always voluntary) makes all the difference - South Korea has also used effective measures (though not quite as martial). In contrast the West has taken the position of ''wait and see how things develop - and introduce changes step by step'', which is the method which is not suited to epidemics. The Asians have more experience of these things. Germany is failing miserably in keeping down the numbers of new cases because they didn't seal off areas quickly enough - but their success has been in keeping people alive. The EU has also failed in as much as that there has been no central organization, no initiative, and no real attempt at European coordination - the member states have been left to themselves to deal with this. The one statistic which reads badly for the UK. is that from all known cases the death rate stands at 3.64% - this is the third highest in Europe, with only Italy and Spain being higher. The rate in Germany is 0.26% - and other European countries such as the Scandinavian ones, and Belgium, Austria and Switzerland are also doing well in this respect. There is no evidence which suggests that these countries have a weaker strain of the disease. Maybe if the billions which have been spent on Trident, which will never be needed, had been spent on the NHS then things could be different.
My daughter's business is a major supplier to the NHS of PPE equipment. It is now impossible to obtain the normal supplies from the Far East, containers are arriving but most stock is now airfreighted directly. Hopefully the Chinese are back to full production but of course demand for products is worldwide. There are also problems with normal supplies from the US and Germany for other necessary equipment, they are keeping stocks for themselves. There will be long term lessons after these breakdowns in supply chains. For the UK it will probably mean extra storage facilities to house reserve stock although much of it has strict shelf life.
Let's avoid this thread being drawn into adverserial party political dross.. I agree, Cologne, much as I cannot abide with totalitarianism. Interesting that many of my friends are actually choosing self isolation regardless of advice. We have seen what has happened elsewhere...
I don't see why the Government shouldn't be criticised for the poor decisions they've made so far (recent and long term). I doubt our resident forum-ruining permatroll would have let it slide if Corbyn was in power?
