Many older supporters will remember John McSeveney, our left winger in the sixties, He used to hang out at the far side of the penalty area and pick up the overshot balls and he would often score or pass to someone inside who would score. Presently, at every corner kick taken, there is a huge swath of clear green grass at the far side of the penalty area with not a person standing on it from either side. However the ball frequently finds it's way there following an overshoot or clearance and each such ball is an opportunity wasted as the ball could easily be pushed back inside. Also leaving a player like Stewart in this area would draw two defenders from the goal area even when we use the present corner kicking strategy. We could also get around the players height problems by punting the ball over the penalty area to the far side of the pitch to an awaiting receiver. The receiver would then send the ball back into the goal mouth from the opposite side of the pitch. Every match and every corner taken has the ball either taken short or pumped into the goal mouth, meanwhile there is no-one at all from either side in the wide open space at the far side of the goal.
Thinking about it, Koren and Brady might as well just shoot with them at the minute given how little threat we have in the middle.
**** me, this has reallyt depressed me now! Let's get shot of the lead-footed players and buy in some with a spring in teir step and a fore-head to connect. We should ask the advise of the players, because according to that heading / brain damage survey, they must be the brightest set of bastards in the football league!!
I remember him well, and you are right he scored or made a lot of goals from this position. For me there should be more movement when the ball is being delivered, which can cause panic in the defence, and space.
Anyone remember the goal That Cursed Side from Darkest Lancashire scored against us last season at the KC, when the ball was played along the ground at a corner and the first played dummied and stepped over it for a runner behind to smash it in? How often have we tried something of that kind of inventiveness?
