Highlights from the game today - Connor looked like he had a great game.
His goal is at about 3 mins but well worth watching the whole thing.

CONNOR WICKHAM is scheduled to hold talks with Gus Poyet over his future, with his loan deal at Sheffield Wednesday expiring next week.

The Owls have made no secret of their desire to keep Wickham on loan for the remainder of the campaign after the 20-year-old has proved to be an overwhelming success in his second spell at Hillsborough, with eight goals in 11 games.

There has been speculation that Wickham could also be a target for a permanent move to Championship high-fliers Nottingham Forest and Burnley, although Wednesday are the only side to have been in talks with Sunderland.

And Poyet plans to speak with Wickham, whose loan has already been extended for a month, before deciding whether to let the England Under-21 international stay at Wednesday or return to the Stadium of Light.

“I’m going to talk with him next week,” Poyet told the Echo.

“I was in touch with him before when there was some of his loan to go.

“But now that his loan is going to finish next week, I need to have another conversation with him.

“Like a lot of players, he’s one where there’s been 150,000 rumours about him.

“But, in reality, he’s our player and he’s been on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. Nothing more. The rest is all rumours.”

Wednesday remain without a permanent manager, although caretaker boss Stuart Gray is expected to be confirmed in that role before the weekend.

Gray is a big fan of Wickham and desperately wants to keep the £8million frontman, despite calls from Sunderland fans that he should be recalled by the Black Cats, with fellow strikers Jozy Altidore and Steven Fletcher netting just five goals between them all season.

Meanwhile, Sunderland midfielder David Vaughan, whose loan spell at Nottingham Forest also expires next week, is expected to complete a permanent move to the City Ground before next Friday’s transfer deadline.

The Echo understands that Forest are confident a deal will be struck for the Welsh international, who has just six months remaining on his Sunderland contract.

Vaughan’s departure would represent another saving on Sunderland’s wage bill after the departures of Ji Dong-won and Cabral earlier this month.

Going to have to disagree with most on here. I've said in the past that I thought he's a good Championship player. Thats only based on the few times I've seen him turn out for us Aand the limited opportunities given him by 3 different managers, so perhaps I am being a little unfair on the lad.

I just think we need to be aiming higher than that. We have to get someone in with a proven track record of consistent scoring at the highest levels, which ever coutnry we get him from, but preferably the PL. We just arent in a position of bringing him back and giving him time to bed in.

We are struggling to score, our strikers certainly are. We need to re-jig our front line and in doing so improve the level of quality and finishing. Connor isnt the answer to that problem.

No arguments at all - but people want Jordan Rhodes or Danny Ings - neither of which are any better than Wickham. Gus may give him a chance and he may surprise us all - I think, had he been given a chance instead of left to rot on the bench, he'd have been good enough for the PL (He's certainly no worse than Altidore and is far quicker). Id' rather have him back than take a chance on one of the other 2 which would be a silly financial outlay to replace someone almost identical - also remember, Ings is playing for the club top of the league and Wickham is playing for a struggling side

Another stroke of genius by Gus. He has let the lad go on loan, get his confidence back and get playing regular football. I have no doubt in my mind Wickham will go on to be an extremely good player and can make it at EPL level. Look at how ****e some of other other players looked under the management of MON.

With a run of games Wickham will certainly be much better than Altidore. He is young and is progressing. Remember Philips was decent at Championship level and then stepped up. Phillips got time to develop in the lower leagues, Wickham has not had that time yet.

To be fair to the lad he has never been given a fair crack or run of games in the EPL but has looked handy on a few occasions coming off the bench.

In Gus I trust, I think he knows exactly what he is doing.

He's only 20.. he's a quality championship player now and bare in mind he's lost about 2 years of his development through poor management.

I hope we keep him, he will turn into a good player

Trade him for Jordan Rhodes, nowt against Whickham but for me he plays like a centre forward 20/30 years ago which is fine for the physical championship and ****e for the premier league..

Until I see him get a decent run of games with us can't really comment either way foe definite, but I do have a funny feeling he's going to prove a lot of people wrong if he does get that chance along with some good support from the fans
