Gary Neville was RB most of the time to be fair. It was the left wing position (Scholes, Cole, Gerrard etc. all played out there) and Owen's partner that was up for debate (Heskey, Crouch etc) and then Rooney's partner.
Gary Neville? An injury always spoilt it at tournement time though. Gerrard in 2002, Rooney and Owen in 2006. There was also Rio's little woopsy with drugs test.
Peter Crouch has always had a great record for England, but did get forgoten when PL lavour of the month strikers took his place. No striker has come close to Crouch's record since (apart from the obvious Rooney) and most national sides will still have him in the squad. Like Germany with Klose. The England squad is to materialistic. Bring back Crouch!
He was in the early part of the so-called golden generation but Rooney was the latter part, I couldn't state both IMO However, you get the point I was making. We rarely picked the flavour of the month during that time, it was always the same team but for one or two positions.
Here..... you are telling me that lot turned up for every friendly which I have said about 5 times on this thread. They didn't. England have always had players dodging and the latest and greatest shunted into squads
Peter Crouch's goal ratio is good because he only ever played against lesser nations. Admittedly he did his job well when he played but just had a quick look at who he scored against. Out of 22 goals, only 3 are against teams of any quality. The rest are the likes of Jamaica, Macedonia, Belarus, Andorra, etc.
the majority of rooney's goals are against much weaker sides... same for owen. I think it would be interesting to compare rooney'd new england record when he sets it to charlton's old one.
Yeah those Colombians really got shown up at the World cup by the power houses from Spain and England.
Who said anything about England? They shouldn't even be in the top 20. Spain had an unfortunate tournament, but we know what they can do.
Fair point about England, I wont argue. Spain were very poor and are seemly on their way down rather than up right now. They very much were a great side and their ranking reflected that at the time. In fairness Wales being 10th does demonstrate the way the rankings system can seemingly overly reward certain results. Taking 4 points from Belgium was an amazing achievement. Whether that and the other recent results warrant 10th in the world status is debateable. I admit that as a very happy and proud Welsh man. I do think that European fans have a tendency to under rate sides from other continents that aren't Brazil or Argentina though, hence my original post.
we know what they USED to be able to do but the arrogance and butt hole footbal with 6 or 8 CMs has ended. they've done nothing for 4 years resulting i ntheir ranking dropping. playing "marquee" friendlies in dubai etc etc.
We'll overtake England in these rankings soon enough. As long as we don't blow it, I can't wait to watch us at a major tournament.
