We just need to take small steps and progress year on year without damaging our current position (e.g. retaining our best players and bringing in the best players we can that our budget will allow for).

Considering how competitive this league is, any improvement on this year will be a positive thing. Personally, if we can bring in a top class striker then I think we could even challenge for a Europa cup spot.

I think if we buy well then we can realistically target top 8, obviously strikers are essential, I think our midfield is already very good, perhaps another attacking midfielder but both Ben Arfa and Gosling are going to be like new signings next season. However we really need more quality in depth.

Lets hope that if both us and Sunderland do well next season it will convince lazy Capello to actually come up to the north east to watch us, that is if he actually realises England carries on after Manchester which I am not sure he does.

Cheers! Good thread. Hope next season's derbys are as great as this season's were . Good luck in the transfer window too.

I've said it many times, i'd love to see a day when we're fighting eachother for cups, Euro qualification etc rather than bragging rights and modest finishes.

I hope and feel this time might be upon us in the next 2 years.

The league title, no doubt about it. <ok>

Cheers for coming on here and posting something decent. Makes a big difference from the rest of the Mackems post I've seen on our board today (or shall I say yesterday).

Been looking for some good banter rather than arguing with so-called "fans" and I've found it.

As much as each set of fans enjoys the other in a bit of turmoil, I think most fans would prefer to see both clubs doing well for the good of NE football (shame the Boro let the NE down big time....haha)

Here's hoping for 10th again next season. A 5 points gap either side would do me and my life expectancy the world of good!!

and btw let battle commence for Insomnia ;)

Next season is going to be really close I reckon between both clubs. I'm surprised at how close we were to Sunderland this season. I thought Sunderland would finish above Newcastle because I thought we would finish a few spots lower than we did although I reckon Sunderland hit it about right with 10th. The problem both clubs had this season was their early season lofty positions. It built up hope and raised expectations. But when alls said and done, you are judged on your finish and neither club can be disappointed in where they have ended up.

We scraped 10th so we'd have to be reluctant to boast about a top half of the table finish

That'd do me too (for Sun'lun ie) - I guess the black and white folk too.

As for 'bragging rights'? We lose, most Sunderland lads will give you that. Good luck next season, it's good that we're both there and we should both be able to stay there, what would life be like without Tyne-Wear derbies?*

    * apart from less embarrassing results for us <laugh>

Cheer's at the start of the season I said I would take 17th but 12th is just brilliant.

Our home form has been up and down so hopefully we can improve and here's hoping we bring in some quality players.

Happy with the season, had some amazing results and finished the season with no relegation jitters 12th will do me.
We have a core of a team which can be built on, providing Nolan and Barton sign new contracts (would love Jose to as well, but can't see it happening). But we have acheived a lot with a pretty small team.

One for Sunlan fans then, how do you see things panning out over the summer?
You've got a canny few players going out the door, do you think Short will keep spending big???
Your squad has been built up with Loan players, will you do the same again?

We know we'll be spending this summer, but I'm hoping it's not big. I don't want big names, I want players here to play for the shirt. So hopefully there will be plenty of new faces for us :D

I'm both cautious and optimistic for next season. There's obviously the chance of a second season slump, and I'm not sure that the spirit Hughton instilled in the side will remain. Enrique looks to be on his way out and Barton is stalling on a new contract as well (I've no doubt he'd have signed in a heartbeat if Hughton was still here). That said, we've built a solid foundation for next season. Ben Arfa is coming back and we have a lot of money to spend. We also have some very promising youngsters so the future is reasonable bright.

If we do get Menez, it's more than likely we won't go for him I think...
