It makes more sense relative to the purchase fee (look how Tammy’s is double his sale fee) but why believe one source over another? Didn’t Wilson have strong links to the old board and acted as a mouthpiece at times? I think things have changed since then And Chelsea would still need to use it. I would it expect it to not kick in until two years have passed anyway.
TBH it matters little what the buy back clause is. Even if it is 25mill, Chelsea activate it and Tino decides to go back there we've still made 20mill profit AND got at least a couple of years of Tino.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/footbal...r-tino-livramento-kickstarts-teen-revolution/ Says “believed to be at least £40 million” in this article.
So, having done some research, seems our Tino has Portuguese roots, surname search backs this up too.
Another significant party in the buy back option, apart from both clubs, is Tino himself. Let's not forget he decided to leave Chelsea once, despite being the darling of their youth academy. Is he really going to be in a rush to go back there next summer, if he has one good season with us? He's just been called up to England U21s for the first time, after only two Premier League games. With Trippier and Kyle Walker in their thirties now, he could realistically have hopes of a senior call up in the not-too-distant future.
If Chelsea do buy him back, it will be at their leisure - as he's so young, it could be more than 3 seasons. They know where he is. Look at how long they loan their talent out for. As Chelsea have to pay us 25m, they will wait until they are more certain than when giving a returning loan a spin in a few games, only then to re-loan them (Abraham, RLC, Gilmour, Bertrand, Zouma, Ampadu, Gallagher etc)
What you say about repurchasing, giving a try and then re-loaning might be true if the fee is 25m. But the fee is being reported at closer 40m. I would only expect them to pay that if they were confident he would play and not need replacing. Look at Ake. His buy back was 40m. And they were clearly looking in defense as they signed Thiago Silva and are looking for another this summer Now perhaps they thought he wasn’t worth that fee - but a close rival did (and so the market did) I would also expect there to be a time limit on the clause. If they haven’t come in after 3 years and we can get him to agree to a contract extension (which seems unlikely given his performance level) and we get to 2026 (end of his original contract) I would expect the clause to have expired There will be a window
Anyone know the mechanics behind these deals? presumably the player would have to agree to the buy back with the two clubs, therefore it’s part of his contract. If we wanted to offer him a new deal then the buy back clause would then have to be transferred across? Or could we potentially buy out the buy back?
No, I don't think so. That will purely be between the 2 clubs. But Chelsea can't force him to re-sign for them even if they activate the buy back clause. He will just say no.
I would imagine all it means is Chelsea have first dibs at him on that money. Even if he was valued at £60m we would have to offer him to Chelsea first at £40.
My understanding is that we would just have to accept a £40m bid from Chelsea. We could accept multiple bids at the same time if we wanted then it would be his choice where he went, but we are contracted to accept £40m from Chelsea
Yep exactly. And to be fair he probably would choose Chelsea as he and his family are all lifelong Chelsea fans.
Yeah if he gets to the level that Chelsea actually do want him for £40m then it’s not like he’s going to stay here anyway and sign another deal. But anyway that is 3 years away so let’s just wait and see
It is also very much in our interest that he gets to that level or close to it and moves on hassle free. That way we will have more similar opportunities for similar signings People may not like it but it is what it is . The more it happens the closer we have a chance of getting to the likes of Dortmund who can both attract multiples of these kinds of player at once and reinvest the massive number profits in both more young players like this but also a higher overall standard of supporting player in the rest of the squad
The buyback clause matters not. If he develops into a top player(looking likely) then he will be gone in a couple of seasons anyway. We get a good player for a couple of seasons and a big profit. So no different to most of our signings really. Enjoy having him with us while it last cos I think he will go right to the top in time
Exactly. It means that if he’s any good, which the early performances strongly suggest, we make £35 million profit. This sits absolutely square with our business model.
