I suggest you read my post again. At no point did l write it was not his responsibility to orgainse his defence, l wrote it would be helpful if he had an experienced CB in front of him.
Not really IMO. City highly rate him and view him as Ederson's successor. I'm not really sure why you think it's such a risk? He's an excellent shot stopper and has much better distribution than McCarthy or Forster.
Because he's unproven above League 1 level. Any signing making a 2 division jump is a risk, particularly in such an exposed position. What if he doesn't make the step up, and we're left with McCarthy back in goal? Gunn was highly rated by City, looked good at a lower level and ended up a flop. There's plenty of keepers/players who have looked good at lower levels, or in youth academies, who haven't made the step up to the pressure cauldron of the PL. Its a big jump, and I'd feel far more comfortable if we also had another keep coming in we could fall back on if needed. Alas, we don't. We've just got to hope Bazunu can make the step up, and not falter like Gunn or Gazzaniga.
I thought the same when this first looked like happening but I didn't realise quite how well regarded he is by City, Ireland, Pompey (I know its league 1 but they all say they knew he would be playing in europe soon enough) and apparently our scouting team! All transfers have an element of risk, but this one seems a good buy. I do agree that going into the season with an unproven & inexperienced GK and someone we know is not good enough to start is a risk though. Lets just hope he hits the ground running!
Tino was completely unproven above academy level. And City rate Bazunu a lot higher than Gunn. I don't think Gunn was ever earmarked as Ederson's future replacement. As for McCarthy, he's not great but he's not exactly terrible either.
Happy to be corrected but I never remember Gunn being spoken about in such glowing terms. I couldn’t find any mention of a buy back for example
Tino is a bad example, because we had KWP to fall back on if Tino wasn't up to scratch! We don't have that luxury in the GK department. McCarthy might come in and do a job for the occasional game, but he can't be relied on. I remember it being mooted at the time that Gunn had a buy back as well. Can't remember where I heard that though!
