Since we're making the comparison with Billy Sharp, that would be the same Billy Sharp who in January, became the leading goalscorer in English football this century, overtaking the record set by Rickie Lambert. That Billy Sharp?
Yes that Billy Sharp. How many is he on now? I wonder how many Rickie would have scored if his last seasons had been in the Championship. Did he score 29/30 for us in that league and then 10 and about 14 in the PL?
A bit, yeah. But no record lasts forever, and at least it was Billy who broke it and not someone like Jamie Vardy.
You seem to think I’m knocking him... why? I love Billy. All I said was I didn’t think he was a PL striker, but he’ll get his chance this season. This was why I asked the questions about Adams as I’ve not seen anything beyond highlights of him. His play reminded me of Billy. In the championship, that’s a good thing for sure. I’d like to know if those have seen him regularly think he can cut it in the PL.
No, I accept your point, it’s a perfectly valid question. In response to your last sentence above, there’s only one way to find out imo. Plenty of people had doubts about Rickie Lambert cutting it in the prem. Danny Ings too, come to that. And Jamie Vardy. Unless someone gives these lower league guys a chance no one will ever know who can make the step up.
I’d love Billy to have a cracking season, score 20 and Sheffield United stay up, finishing below us One of my favourite moments in recent years is when Billy scored that cracker for the Blades the week he lost his son. When he lifted his shirt up with the message, I had tears streaming down my face. Some people deserve good things to happen to them. Billy is one of those people. I like Chris Wilder too.
Let’s just ask Billy Sharp about Che Adams (As in-depth as you’d expect from a player interview. e.g. as shallow as my choice in women)
I’m in a YouTube rabbit hole. Chris Wilder on Che Adams move to Birmingham. This was when United were league one and Birmingham were championship. Looks like Sheff Utd have a sell-on clause.
Billy has been a great FL striker for a very long time. Not only is there no shame in that, it had been an exceedingly lucrative career for him. But I am with FLT: his resume would not have been helped by spending an extended time in the PL.
Even if we spend 15m on Adams, and he doesn't cut it in the Prem, we'd still be able to sell him for 10m to a top Championship club the season after.
