Reading the Sky article I can't see any mention of the international break being RM's line in the sand, it may well be but how you inferred that I can't see. https://www.skysports.com/football/...ierarchy-despite-winless-premier-league-start. "Southampton have no immediate plans to sack Russell Martin, Sky Sports News understands."
Try this one: https://x.com/SaintsExtra/status/1848652088856678729?t=ZOA-fz75T2pFw2gWEdAqWg&s=19 Maybe it was said on the TV box, I don't know.
I think it's fairly clear that he's not getting sacked due to what happened on Saturday now. They won't sack him after the City game either so that takes us to the Everton game. I just don't see how he survives if we lose that game.
Agree. Have thought for quite a while that the Everton game is going to be the decider. Would mean Lallana/caretaker takes the Wolves game, assuming no immediately appointment hiding in the bushes, and then the new coach comes in and gets an international break before their first games against Liverpool and Brighton.
I really don't want Lallana as a caretaker. He's shown he's still got plenty to offer on the pitch so I'd rather he focuses on that. Still cross he didn't get on the pitch on Saturday.
Yeah, this is mental if we think we can carry on like this. That said, I don't expect the club to come out and say his days are numbered, we want him to take the pounding for the new guy at City, then he is on his bike. But I'd rather they stayed silent and got someone in who can sort out this desperate mess.
You could always argue that this club doesn't shout about new players, so why should they shout about getting a new manager. Put another way, I would not be surprised if RM is replaced 'overnight', with a new manager installed, seamlessly. Or the board could just blunder on aimlessly.
It could well be but it certainly wasn't "got till the next international break apparently" that was posted as though it was chapter and verse. It's all conjecture and rumour.
Agree & personally with more & more somewhat weird substitutions & defensive comments after recent games, I just don’t believe RM would be a good manager next year in the Championship. We got worked out with an aggressive press & with him at the helm, taking us down, I think it’ll be even harder for him rather than the “fresh” start he had last season. Stoke, Everton & Wolves are massive & too important to miss. My fear is SR will let him have these games; we’ll stumble past Stoke, lose the next two but the cup run will keep him in.
I seriously think they get a kick from ‘doing things differently’ and want to ‘Break the mould’. It’s a multi billion pound industry that you don’t just walk into and re-invent the wheel.
I expect clubs like Wimbledon, Barnsley, and Bradford City all had a 10 year plan to be stable Premier League clubs while they were in it. As you say, football is constantly changing so unless you are one of the elite clubs there is no point in long term planning, the main aim should be financial survival. Generally speaking, there is a direct relationship between winning games on a regular basis, and the amount of money coming in, whether that’s from ticket sales, transfer activity, or TV money. It is a certainty that a possible record low points total, and a record number of games lost in a season, are not components of a sound business model.
However, watching a team ship a record amount of goals may be considered good TV viewing, for all non-Saints fans, so maybe we'll be selected for every TV game, just to provide armchair punters with goals
Come on. I know we're all grumpy at the moment, but this sort of thing is just hyperbole. What exactly are they trying to re-invent? As far as I can see they're just trying to be loyal to a coach who clearly is very popular among the players, and who got us promoted a few months back.
Their approach is, erm, unconventional to say the least. Left field managerial appointments, sticking with possession football when we’re on track to make records. And when the inevitable happens they can just say “it’s a 10 year plan”. Ah ok then. It’s such bollocks and I’m actually really annoyed about it. We got a chance with promotion and we’ve squandered it already. We’re not going to be better off in 10 years by being relegated this season, it’s madness.
I saw a video, might have been talksport with Martin O’Neil, Martin Keown, Alex Crook and a Scottish guy hosting the chat, and their conclusion was that the next international break would be the most likely time for him to go. Especially if we get nothing from the Everton and Wolves games.
