shopping .... an everyday tale of all folk !

well be careful for what you are ripped off on! over the years I have "MONITORED" some of my shopping.
last few weeks wife has been recovering from major op and not been able to leave the house .. so amajor shop pre op now needed topping up so went to Tesco and bill was fine some quantities were "in an adjusted state" but overall as expected. The first opportunity to take wife to dads house allowed me to pop into Lidl for a couple items [ once a fortnight ]........ basically items usually bought in local co -op ...
On comparison at home was shocked at the VFM ... in CO- OP you get nVFM, wicked prices even the "reduced " is more than Tesco regular on shelf.
8 off the 15 items I bought were "rip off's" 3 were VFM and 4 what I expected to pay "for lesser Q items!
The biggest rip off milk priced a few pence more than Tesco, BUT Tesco sell 4 pt = 2.25 or[ close] ltr but Lidl only do it in ltrs .. so paid more for a lot less! 2ltr
Woman in front of me had 2 trolleys filled the belt and paid something like £188 or so I felt sorry for her as some of the items I had tried before 6/10 flavour wise etc... 2 containers of milk ! I wonder why so many shop there, always busy [ mind you usually only 2 or 3 tills compared to tesco 6 or 7 with 2 other pay methods" ] and delivery

do you find that non stream[ not top 4 ] supermarkets are VFM or dont shop there or only for odd items as closer?

well done a mince pie and conclusion on a repeat of the first 2 rounds and Tesco gets the first place Aldi second M&S third .Sainsbury 4th Morrisons 5th

bananas whilst shopping in Aldi is "cheaper" ish! You have to pity those do or have to! [ same as Lidl ] DONT GET ME WRONG BOTH do have some very competitive products that are "tasty and and VFM"
I love bananas browner the better, Tesco always have had a good size and price ratio. Because Grand daughter is in the dreaded BRI and daughter with her 24/7 [ almost ] had to do her shopping, with GD2 she uses ALDI only having 6 bananas left I bought 6 more @ 16p each .. today I saw the rip off....... after carefully going through 2 of 6 new boxes I selected the 6 biggest bananas .. well you pay each need VFM!
TESCO 6 1008GRMS INC: fact all on same stem end so less than 1008 ..... ALDI 6 all separate minimal stem end 637 grms tesco cost was 90p kg so about 91p ALDI cost 96p so for 5p less I got 371 grms more..

I noted 5 other items where like for like with tesco TESCO WERE ON TOP ... Milk full cream tesco 6pt was under £2 [ £1.85?] ALDI half cream 6pt £2.15
A like for the 22 items bought in /TESCO v ALDI Aldi was just 7p cheaper on cost .. helped by buying 4 brocolli heads at 8p v 4 heads loose at 82p note**

note the ALDI 8p when the stem was reduced to same distance below first floret as Tesco, reduced the weight to 176 grms ave v tesco which was 362 average! SO VFM overall [ all items ] has to go to Tesco.

so ALDI is the cheapest supermarket! well that maybe so but the standard of the "food items" is somewhat lacking.
I bought bananas at ALDI on 23rd December and Bananas at Tesco on the 18th SEE ABOVE well all those gone now! WELL TODAY bought bought another load of bananas from green to yellow and the yellow couple were ready to eat, taste and peeling. I mention peeling because the Aldi ones had to be started with a knife cur and the skin was like leather! 6 large bananas from tesco was £1 34p = 22p each
weight was over 1.4kgs and 9/10 for flavour ... not quite ripe but soft and getting there.

over the christmas I must say on quantity of usable product v taste and KEEPING QUALITY I wouldnt put ALDI NUMBER 1 ... and gave up on LIDL months ago

I usually shop at Tesco in Brisllngton on a Monday and a Friday, and occasionally at Asda Whitchurch on a weekend just for odds and ends.

What I have noticed is that prices are going up on the same item in just a few days between visits and rises of 10-25p with apparently no reason

And on items where the price is unchanged, you often get a smaller/lighter amount.

the biggest shrinkage raising in price is Cadbury's creme eggs.... in the middle / late 80's I did a night shift at Frys in Keynsham it was only for about 18 month's .. they did a pack of of them cant remember if 3 or 4 .. [ 4 maybe? ] well when having a clearout in 2012 found the carton with a load of comments on it ... been used as a "note pad" ... in 2012 you could easily fit more than the stated number on the carton about 30% more? the latest ones seem even smaller than last years and gone up by at least 20% ???
Weeta bix a few years back [ 5 or 6 ] used to be 7.8p per biscuit or less and about 5+% bigger, couldnt get 2 side by side in the bowl .. can now!! price is now 11-5 to 12-5p per biscuit

Chocolate in general is much more expensive than it’s ever been
If you buy a multi pack of 4 Mars bars for instance you probably get 1 - 1.5 full sized bars from the size they used to be when I was a kid
Same with sausages, pies, etc all are much smaller these days and taste nothing like as good as they used to

in the 70's used to go on expeds to AUSTRIA, the 2 main "side of the road vendors used to be STECKLER FISH & BRATWURST... STECKLER used to be about a foot long and bratwurst in a 9-10" baguette roll served with a pale orangy yellow mustard!
went there again in around 2008 toured AUSTRIA AND NO SIGN OF EITHER! a local shop selling meat products did have them, and was knowledgable about "the vans" stated that his bratwurst were now VFM and bought 6 or 8 .. said, his, the biggest around as home made and were around 6" they were tasty but needed 2 !
chocolate of course is getting less and less, in the mix used to around about 65-70% now some are down to 40%

I can remember going to Fry's in Keynsham (spelt K E Y N S H A M as per Radio Luxembourg) on school trips and go home with loads of broken Crunchies. The cost of supposedly English chocolate in Canada is astronomical and doesn't taste anything like the really good stuff I had during my life in England, which makes me think very little is now made in the U.K. but rather some cheap backwater country. The worst tasting supposed chocolate is no doubt made by Hersheys as it tastes much the same as those brown logs you flush down the toilet. Ergh! The market is trying our patience because what was 2 for a dollar are now 2 for 3 dollars and the list goes upwards from there in all sectors of our purchases. How about 60 dollars for a leg of lamb and if you want lamb chops instead you will pay at least 15 dollars for two. Ouch at every turn in the supermarket and a heart attack when you get to the checkout.
