Jeez, what are they making it out of?............................wait..........................don't answer that
My local growing up was a proper old style pub. Pool table, dart board, showed sport on the tv all the time including the horses on a Sunday for the gamblers, didn't serve food but put out roast potatoes and snacks on the bar for free on Sunday, still had the same falling apart decor and furniture that'd been there from what must have been decades, kept prices reasonable and was basically only frequented by the same local punters who mostly fancied themselves as retired gangsters. To anyone who hadn't been there it was seen as a rough pub and often wasn't particularly busy, but I absolutely loved it. Even worked there for a while as a second job. The couple who ran it had been in the pub game a long time and never moved with the times, would get pissed with the punters and were lovely people. When they finally decided to pack it in the pub was bought out and totally refurbished. Dart board, pool table and tv went straight away, work clothes got banned and they started to serve overpriced food. To me it totally destroyed the character of the pub and it was the last proper pub left in the area. Now it is constantly busy, makes a **** load of money and only a handful of the old locals will still go in there for a drink. It's the same for all old school pubs, they can't survive without moving with the times so eventually they get turned into gentrified pubs for a different type of punter.
yeah but the prior owners ran it into the ground and didn't make it welcoming to anyone else and neither did clientele. You need to welcome newb in or they die. you don't need to rip the heart out of anything to be welcoming.
There used to be a pub in Shrewsbury town centre which was popular with people who wanted a pint at lunchtime. The old couple who ran it did basic food like bacon sandwiches, etc. Everything was £. So a bacon sandwich was a £ as was a bacon, egg & sausage sandwich. I asked the old guy why everything was a £ once, his answer "It's easier to add up when I have had a few beers"
You mean like not 606 not allowing new people in because they won't fix the email system so it's probably going to just wither and die over time.
I used to love my local, literally spent Thursday-Sunday in there - mid day Saturday til close etc. pretty much owned the place in the end! We all started in there when we were 16, couple years down the line asked for a little spread etc for one of our birthdays... Land lords face was a picture when he found out it was for his 18th Good times
exactly the same happened on my 18th when someone nrought a chip butty & requested a few candles were put in it as it was someones birthday Landlord went ape when Smiler presented it to me - probqbly didn't help that even though it was bout 12.30 (lunch) i was already a bit pissed and had 2 spliffs and a line of whizz That night was very messy
Got in there after work last night and I'm still not exactly sure what's happening. As you know, Denice and her family are from Co Durham and have very broad North East accents. In addition, both Denice and her sister were ****ered when I got there, so I couldn't really make head or tail out of what they were saying As I understand it, she handed her notice in yesterday and her regional manager is coming to see her today. They want her to stay on while they find a relief manager or somesuch. No idea what's happening about the gas being switched off today and I really don't know if it'll be open. I'll find out later, no doubt
This is gonna be like a horror film where you think it's dead but it keeps coming back for one last go.
Surely they will send someone else to manage pub if Denice goes. Never know, could be someone decent.
