its simply a recrutiment agents dream. they just need one person on another person's network and up pops your profile as a possible link so you can ask them to join the network. 90% of requests i get are recruiters. the other 10% are people building networks ready to move jobs. I personally reject more now as I got everyone in my work and my old place of work and after that you do get some weird ones come in. it only takes one sales guy to link with someone in china and you are pestered.
I initially signed up when it started but closed it very quickly, the requests got on my nerves. Plus I didn't see a benefit from it either.
there's little. until you want to go move jobs. i have a few guys from uni on it, a few guys form old work place, never use it to network with them. I get constant job stuff from people who should know better cos like RHC says they don't look at your profile... prob cos they are all way out of date. I ignore.
I for one would never take any sales stuff on it. I would go completely the opposite way and find that really annoying. I have actually stopped even reading articles o nit as if you reply to an article say on an engineering topic as you can join large groups for info topics... reply and these buzzards come sniffing trying to get you to link. Linkedin have actually killed themselves i think. they remind me of the thing before facebook... erm.... bebo... if someone launches a better version everyone will abandon linkedin. networking is not baout getting hassled. Its like going to a trade show... oyu do not hand out a business card if you don't want to be hassled. but on linkedin you have little option but to get hassled.
