Any college football – er gridiron fans out there?

This is the most exciting time of the year if you are. Today marks the 113th renewal of the annual Army Navy game. It's one of the longest running rivalries in all of sports. I'm a hardcore Navy fan however I think today, Navy may see it's first loss in 10 years. Army has surpassed them in the running game and that may be Navy's downfall today. I hope not.

I will try to post more information in the coming days but I just wanted to get this thread started. I have to get ready for the festivities as the game starts in 1:45!

notre dame played navy in Dublin this year. it was a sellout. unfortunately I couldn't get tickets. I have been watching them this season. it's great that they're in the championship game but I think Alabama will beat them.
the one thing I don't like about college football is the amount of 1 sided thrashings there are.

I've been watching this rivalry for a while now and this had to be one of the best games. While I will always pull for NAVY, it was gut wrenching seeing Steelman (Army Quarterback) fumble away the game. CBS tv showed him for at least 7 minutes after the game ended and he cried the whole time. That makes it 11 in a row by the Midshipmen.

Inkedupp - I could only stomach the first half of that game in Dublin. I knew then that Notre Dame was going to be a force again. As for the one sided drubbings.....there are a few different reasons for that. One is , a big team will try to schedule a chump opponent before they play another big opponent to give the second team some time and to rest the best players.

The big reason that I prefer college gridiron to the NFL is the college players try harder. Whether it's to get noticed by pro scouts or just for pride. Pro players are going to get paid no matter what.
 
Leo, how does it work when you say a big team tries to play a weaker college before another big team?
they can't pick and choose who they play can they?
I know there's thousands of teams all over the country but there must be divisions or rosters?
I must be missing something.
 
Yes. There are quite a few conferences and division. Most of a teams conference games are pre scheduled by the conference. Each team plays between 9-12 games a season. About 85% or so have to be IN conference leaving the other 15% or so to be OUT of conference games. Basically, they can try to play who they want in that 15%. Sometimes - well at least once a season, a 'big' team can schedule a weak team just before they play a big rival. Which can be interesting as the 'big' team will assume a win and 'look past' to the bigger rivalry game and actually lose to the weak team. Another thing that plays into this is that a very good team will have 2 or 3 game books (with different plays). If the 'big' team doesn't want their rival to see their 'A' game play book, they will use the other two against the weak team. This can lead to poor play against the weak team.

Conversely, a weak team will schedule a home game against a 'big' team. This draws a lot of fans which leads to money. OR -the 'weak' team will 'sell' the home game to the 'big' team for lots of money or even a neutral site. In 2000 I saw Navy play Notre Dame in Orlando - neither of their home field.
Hope all of this made sense. College gridiron has so many teams with so many conferences it can be confusing. In 2014, they will (finally) go to a play off.

Great thread. It's amazing how many teams there are out there. The struggle for places in the NFL must be intense, especially the specialist positions. I had to go out last night and missed all this:( Sounds like it was a great game.

I felt for the Army QB just reading about it, some defeats you never shake off, I hope he gets over it one day.

But you can greatly simplify things by ignoring every other conference other than the SEC, since that is the only one that matters and that will be the case no matter how the Big Ten or ACC continue to try and rearrange themselves. Or if like me, you don't care for the SEC, you can just ignore BCS football completely. The FCS playoffs are way more exciting and fun to follow than 25 minor bowl games.

I kinda agree with this.....next year there will be a limited play off format.

@pompeymeowth The Beef O'Brady Bowl is in my home town and actually IN the stadium where the Rays play (Tropicana Field).

Won't be watching the bowls of today unfortunately, Dutch football is on. Last games before the winter break.
 
Apparently both Arizona and Nevada left their defenses at home. 59 points scored in the 1st half. :emoticon-0104-surpr

EDIT: Wow! What a game. Arizona scored 2 touchdowns in the last two minutes to win. They didn't have a lead until 20 seconds left in the game!
