Dorset nails this one for me - this is a big factor in our fortunes as we were always the 12th man and we always made the stadium a fortress.
I've been to many games over the years and when our crowd get behind the team it makes the hairs on your neck stand up and that must transmit to the field.
I'm not saying its the whole story but I would be daring enough to say its a big part of it.
I don't get this blaming the crowd for the teams shortcomings, not one bit. No crowd on earth would have shown as much faith as we have. The players are not up to the task, its as simple as that. No one can sustain hope season after season when its so obvious that we have not got a team that is worth supporting. Its up to the clubs custodians to do something about it, not the crowd. Fourth biggest crowd in this division is amazing loyalty considering the fare on offer.
I don't think anyone is primarily blaming the crowd. The people who sort out the transfer budget (Short and co), the players (who aren't performing) and the manager (who cannot mask the inadequacies of the others) are more to blame but I do think that the last few seasons have understandably taken it out of the home supporters and they are pretty much waiting for it to go wrong each week. Yes it is up to the players to try and give them some hope and belief that is going to happen but support isn't just about turning up.
All clubs have peaks and troughs and the levels of fans going through the gates at Sunderland at the moment is a credit to the area given the ****e they've had to put up with. That said, I'm not sure it's a ground new players will have been hankering to play at when Coleman was recruiting in January.
When it comes to getting players in we have never seemed to get our first choices in. Even our plans B,C and D struggle to go over the line. Instead we get inferior players at the last minute in desperation, in the past at inflated prices and wages. Managers are always gonna struggle to get results in this case.
