    • Colchester United v Newport County AFC [Saturday 08th October 2016 15:00]

We renew acquaintances with the Exiles of Newport after a hiatus of 28 years on Saturday. It’s the first time we’ve met them since their reformation in June 1989, after going out of business in February 1989 following relegation from the Football League in May 1988. It’s a fate that almost befell the U’s in April 1991, when then owner Jonathan Crisp pulled the plug, before the council bought Layer Road for £1 million to save the club. Happily the Exiles finally made it back into the Football League in 2013 after a long haul up the non-league pyramid. They’ve finished 14th (2013-14), 9th (2014-15) and 22nd (2015-16) in League Two, but presently find themselves at the foot of the Football League after collecting just 6 points from their opening 9 games. In a twist of fate they’ve just appointed Graham Westley as their new manager for this game, after previous boss Warren Feeney paid the price for a woeful start to the campaign.

It’s now 1 win in 8 competitive games for John McGreal’s struggling U’s, with back-to-back reverses - against unbeaten Carlisle (0-2) and a humiliating home defeat (1-2) at the hands of Southampton’s U23 side in the much maligned Checkatrade Trophy - in the past 7 days. Our current slide has worrying similarities with last season’s autumn collapse with saw the U’s slump from 8th place in League One at the start of October to 24th by Christmas, as we went on a club record 19 league match winless streak. It’s imperative to nip this poor run of form in the bud before it becomes the set pattern of the winter months as per the struggles of 2012-13 and 2015-16. In Newport we have the perfect opportunity to record a sizeable home win given their recent atrocious form; although the arrival of a new broom may lift the visitors for this must win game.

Full Time Result Probability: Colchester win 60%; Draw 23%; Newport win 17%.
