This. It may work in the business world but it doesn't when it comes to buying quality football players

The problem is, if you want to bring in a star striker worth paying over the odds for, its likely a club in better shape (already playing in Europe, pays higher wages, whatever) will also be interested in him. Bringing an above average player in takes more than simply offering a big transfer fee, it also usually takes being the best club wanting the players services, being a city his baby mama's willing to move to, etc. E.g. rumour was we offered more for Gameiro than PSG did, but the player picked them anyway, and you can't simply throw money at that problem.

So of all the strikers we scouted there isn't one that suits us? If so there's a fundamental problem with our scouting.

Throwing money at it doesnt work, Freddy taught us that.

But refusing to pay good money for a good player, that won't work either.

Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, have had more recent success than Arsenal because they've spent the money they have on the players then need, where Wenger wouldnt buy and has won nowt.

We are not in that category but if teams like Stoke are going to spend money strenghtening their squard and we won't, then we'll never make the step up.

Fair doos we've made some very sensible buys but when you've for the cash we have and are tgat desperate for a striker, paying a little over the odds is surely worth the extra 15 goals a season which could make or break our tlyear.

Del Boy thinks he can palm everyone off with these crappy statements.

I fully agree with the idea of buying young talented players at a good price and am happy with some of our signings but we had all year to sign a striker and wasnt Andy Carroll a young (geordie!!!) on a decent long term contract.

    Why can't he just say.....

Look guys we want this club to stay in the premiership whilst making a profit for Mike, any decent offers will be accepted and we are unwilling to ever spend more on wages than we currently are, we have also set a maximum spend of 10million for signing's this does include wages, signing on and agent fees.

I must stress that 10 million will only be spent if that money has been collected through the sale of players and must be within that month's financial budget. After the sale of a player and the passing of one month the profit we go directly into repaying mike....

The fact they have made a statement or felt the need to make one; just says everything you need to know.

    Simple as that.

    Moving on.

Exactly what I thought when I heard it. <ok>

More meaningless drivel from Labias. The predictable ****e about not getting the deals done in time, no explanation as to why we couldn't bid more than £6m for Pieters. No doubt we'll get more predictable crap from Pardew, I'll bet they're bloody relieved there's a lengthy break until the next home game.

My thoughts exactly, there's a difference to paying big fees for players purely on their reputation (a la Shepherd) to scouting players thoroughly and paying what is required to "get them over the line".

I am more angry about them ruining the atmosphere than not signing a striker because it at least appeared like they tried to sign a good striker and it was them just be stubborn bastards and not budging from their MO which was why in the end we did not get one (apart from Ba). However getting rid of the singing section just seemed malicious and by ruining the atmosphere it could hurt us more than not signing another striker in the longer term.

I am still pissed that we have failed to replaced Carroll in 7 months though.

'Now that the transfer window has closed, we have once again proved how s**t we are at signing players, and how good we are at taking the pi$$ out of the fans. Our aim was to bring in even less players, due to the extortionate nature of free signings these days. Somehow though, i don't know how, but we even managed to fail that. But hey, there's always January. And honestly, if i could patronise you any more, i would, but that's not possible, so again sorry for that as well.

Alan has unfairly been spending most of his days on youtube, looking for potential targets, so credit to him. I think that pretty much shows the utmost dedication, and another aspect to this master tactician and part time lothario's game. It really doesn't get any better at NUFC because we have made all of the quality signings, most of whom you've never heard of but youtube's never let us down before and not looking likely this time either. So again, praise is due to Mr Pardew and his new state-of-the-art scouting tool.

We see this as the future of NUFC, as most players on it are actually amazing. We were also pleased to have sent ripples through the transfer market with the highly rated Davide Santon, who has played 15 times in 3 years. I can't recommend youtube enough, as it even shows him on loan playing. The keeper was so badly needed for this club, i can't emphasise enough. Pardew knows Rob from his charlton days, and describes him as 'propa nawty' so he should fit right in.

I would just like to add, on the striker front, we will NOT, and i repeat WILL NOT be held to ransom over signings. Free signings are expensive, so you can only imagine how much a £15m striker costs. Mike has assured me and Alan that if the money isn't spent in January, then it will definitely be spent in summer. And if not in the summer then next January. All finances will stay within the club, make of that what you will. There are no cryptic clues in here and we always tell the truth......................promise'

    Yours FAITHFULLY
(Whoops sorry bout the caps, couldn't emphasise that enough)

That was the point of my previous message, I'm not a believer that the club didn't legitimately try to bring in a class striker, the bids we know of suggest as much. But clearly the problem was who we were targeting, in respect to whether the selling clubs were actually interested in selling, and if the players were actually interested in leaving/coming to Newcastle. Yes, the club failed at finding the right player, but I just don't think its as simple as "mike ashley is a cheap bastard who didn't actually want more wages"
So yes, I do agree there was a problem with our scouting and approach.

The Chronicle now have the comments section open online to log your questions that the club will (apparently) answer .. will be based on popularity of question to generate a top 10 - 12 ..

Most at the moment seem to be around decent official communication with the fans, Sports Direct advertising and what this brings to NUFC, how has the 35M been used, how did we fail to sign a striker with so much time to deliver and the change in atmosphere in SJP .. along with all the usual grunts telling MA & DL to just **** off etc which just seem pointless .. <ok>

I think it was pointless them making a statement

We all knew what the crack was anyway so unless they were going to say something that we didn't know then they might aswell have just said feck all as per usual...

Pathetic. But it did make me laugh with "knee jerk" and "early summer". 7 long months they've had, there are no excuses. There should have been nothing knee jerk about it in 7 months. The egos of the men involved at the club always result in these kind of statements. They are unwilling to admit they've failed badly or just not really been trying hard enough. Early summer? Scouting of all positions is an ongoing process in any well run club. Clubs only intensify those searches once a need is identified. We knew we had a need on the 1 Feb 2011, probably earlier. Any club worth their salt would make it happen if they really want or need something, money talks. The striker should have been first through the door. We're too tight and that is why we have failed to buy a quality striker. As for January, it should happen but I suspect it won't. You certainly do not get value in January, and they are always rolling this out as a reason. If they fail again, it'll be 12 months.

I don't advocate a senseless overspend but quality strikers cost money as they know after banking 35m big ones from Carroll. There are no shortcuts. They are just too short sighted to realise how much difference a quality striker makes in the PL. All of the other good transfer work can be undone. Its like building a house. It may be nothing without the structures and underlying elements, but without the correct finishing, you'll never sell it anyway. I think our defence will stand us in good stead and I'm confident we'll do ok, maintaining last seasons level. Its such a shame we have handicapped ourselves in this way.

And where in the statement is any signal of intent for the next transfer window. For me, the only way they could make amends to us the fans was to come out and say 'Okay guys, we missed our target because the window closed on us however we are setting up a deal with said club to sign said player on January 1!'.

There is absolutely no mention of the next window and what their ambitions will be, that's because we all know what those ambitions are now, and they don't want to patronise us any further.

So we don't buy anyone, fair play to them? Well f**k me i've heard it all now

Mike: 'I aint paying more than 5m Del'

Del: 'I know you aint mate, you aint buying anyone, i know you too well'

Pardew: 'Can i just interrupt you for a second lads, i'd really love Carlton Cole'

Mike: 'Shut up and keep sucking'

Del: 'That's a great idea Mike, well done for thinking that up'

Mike: 'You know me Del, just tell them we tried for Carlton Cole and failed, they'll be happy with that'
