Not a Bristol City issue but here we go again, only this time it's not us,it's the local people objecting.A WARD councillor claims there are "significant problems" over plans to build a supermarket at Bristol Rovers' Memorial Stadium in Horfield.

* There is a clear majority against a new Sainsbury's supermarket at the ground.

* The project depends on consent being given for the supermarket at the current ground to offset the costs.

* Supermarkets seem to sprout up like mushrooms on a wet autumn day these days and you just wonder how many we actually need.

* Already "knocked on hundreds of doors" which had show a clear – but not overwhelming – majority were against.

* Most people who commented consider it an opportunity to invest in the top part of Gloucester Road, build family homes, create a community facility and new jobs.

* Nonetheless, in areas that would see an increase in traffic we need to ensure that it is acceptable.

* We continue to discuss these and other points with residents and council officers, and we look forward to communicating the final plans in the coming months.

* Nick Higgs said the supermarket scheme was very popular and he was under the impression that the majority of people were in favour.

This is just a report by a couple of Liberal Democrat workers in their own ward but it does give an indication of what the locals are thinking and I've only bullet pointed it.
The majoity of people don't want it,the politicians are still waffling and the chairman of Bristol Rovers states the bleeding obvious coming from the suits..

Sounds like a familiar story to me,god help the fans, they are in for a long frustrating wait or so it seems...

We should both join forces and get the residents of Dale Farm onto the land in AV and the Minimal. Then let the locals decide.

I'm hoping they get their ground, we get ours and put all this behind us.

I would even be happy if they got their ground shared with them for season and we rebuilt AG.

wiz <ok>

old story. it was in the evil post on 15/08/12 and been re-used by them today! here is the thread on our OS forum on the 15/08/12 http://www.brfcforum.co.uk/index.php?/topic/104742-‘clear-majority’-against-mem-supermarket-plan/ and 1st comment got the link to the evil post and when you open it its exactly the same story and even got todays date! just why are the evil post using the same story? what is their intentions here? throughout your stadium planning, evil post been right behind your application showing support. but for ours, they recycle negative stories. strange that! but thats my opens though.
but reading on in the thread on our OS forum, apparently the evil post attacked the claims of the councillor. (6th comment down).

quote from evil post....
"AT best Councillor Bev Knott could be said to be mischief making. At worst he could be accused of unnecessarily trying to destabilise an important development for the city. He talks about there being "significant problems" over plans for a Sainsbury's supermarket on the Memorial Stadium site. But he offers no evidence.

He says there is a "clear majority" against the store. But he has no figures.

His comments are based on an unscientific and incomplete doorstep straw-poll of residents.

And anecdotal evidence is no substitute for the real independent research conducted by Sainsbury's and Bristol Rovers.

Mr Knott's survey, even when it is finished, will be unhelpful.

And we have already seen the damage that can be inflicted on a scheme by city councillors becoming obsessed with supermarkets.

You have only to look at how they got in the way the way of the perfectly good scheme for Bristol City to move from Ashton Gate and build a new stadium

The last thing we need is for them to start undermining Bristol Rovers' plans.

For heaven's sake Mr Knott step back and look at the bigger picture and allow this city to move forward rather than shackling us to the past."

if this challenge by the evil post is true then fair shout but i havent seen it apart from the quote (with no link) on the thread on the OS forum.

end of the day the locals need to think what they prefer, either sainsburys or a redeveloped bigger football stadium. they dont like us so its their chance to get rid of us.

<ok>
