Simon Peach reports that Southampton refuse to drop their claim that Clattenburg should not be appointed to their games in future.

Martyn Ziegler to give more info later in a report, and Saints are heading for a clash with the Premier League.

Kind of wish we would just leave it now - the Premier League aren't going to budge on this clearly. Even if they did think that Clattenburg didn't give Saints a penalty due to previous mistakes made against Everton 6 years ago, they are hardly going to admit it.

Best for everyone if he doesn't get a game here for the rest of the season, but in general I don't approve of clubs thinking they can select refs. The only problem now is that Saints have virtually given their fans the go-ahead to yell at Clattenburg.

Peach says Cortese wants all referee conversations to be recorded, and complaints to be handled by an independent panel.

By asking for that to be considered, Nicola has given himself wriggle room to not look as if he has not lost completely. He's on to a loser with his original complaint.

I agree with this, it's weird how the same company that employs the refs can be judge on a case against a ref.

That and with this approach, he may have a few chairmen waiting in the wings should the FA start to listen; they could then come out and say that this is a good idea.

I don't like where we are heading though.

What is the difference between Clattenburg not being allowed to Referee at Everton while Moyes was there, and not being allowed to Referee our games because we think he isn't suitable because of his track record?

That would be good as it could exonerate Referees, however it could also condemn them and there aren't that many top quality candidates available.

How do we know there aren't any other good refs about? All we get is the same old people.

Yes, because it's bloody hard to get promoted to the level required to be able to ref in the PL.

I wouldn't mind the lady linesman becoming a ref.

And even then it doesn't guarantee the good up and coming ones make it. I remember when I played Southern League and Rob Styles used to ref some of our games. Such an ego it was unbelievable. I remember turning up early for a home match and he was in the bar having a coffee, I said "Hi Ref" politely and he looked me up and down and said, "Aren't you one of the players on 4 bookings?" He booked me ten minutes into the first half, for calling their CB a fat twat off the ball.

I whispered it ... I think he was following me to catch me out!

How have you found progression as a ref Tom?

    Hahaha, tut tut FLT!

Reminds me of a story I read about the fastest sending off ever, when a player said "****ing hell that was loud" after the ref blew his whistle for kick off!

I've only been promoted once, from level 7 to 6, which is a piece of piss. Am aiming for level 5 this season. I'm hopeful I will become a Football League referee and if I get to that stage then I would certainly aim for the Premier League.
