It's a bit daft that so much has been made of it though.

If Cortese believes he is right, he has a thick skin....don't worry about him.

Forgive me, but it's a bit weak in either football or schooling. In your case, that could be construed as a good pointer and reminder to the student that they need to keep their feet on the floor...

Indeed. With the attention span of the Twatter users I know, they'll already have forgotton this and moved on to another story by now.

And she is less trouble than this Clattenberg debate.

Probably wasn't the best example. The Ferrari one earlier was better. My point is that a professional can't make personal comments. The ref should have booked Lallana and sent him away. Instead, he chose to make it personal. I don't know any job where that is considered acceptable practice.

Watford fan in peace. Whilst at first hand it does seem a little precious I agree with soemone earlier who said that this is Southampto making a general protest about the refereeing of their games this season. The less established teams do not always get the rub of the green and Clattemnbirg's comments were clearly the alst straw. I imagine this will all blow over ptretty quickly.

Like someone else on here I know someone who knows Clattenburg and he said he is a real prick, using his position to try and get free drinks in football grounds and posing with ladies etc.

I agree. My point from the start is that unless something really bad said, we should just have left it and moved on. There are bigger battles that need fighting than a comment made by a referee. Just look at what's happened, we are the lead story on Sky Sports... for all the wrong reasons. I can't see the club coming out of this with much credit.

Lallana didn't look that bothered at the time...probably more upset about the penalty decision. It was probably a subsequent discussion translated for Mauricio by David Salas (personally I blame him).

Yes, it is daft. Not really Lallana or Clattenburg all the club's fault, though.

People assume they know what Clattenburg said, which they don't. Then they assume that Lallana or the club is protesting because they were personally offended and hurt, which is probably not true.

If FIFA/FA/whoever had issued a statement at any point that

    1) Explained the interpretation of the hand ball rule, and why that call was correct or not
    2) Explained exactly what happened in the incident, what Lallana did wrong (or right) and what Clattenburg did wrong (or right)
    3) Handed out an appropriate reprimand, suspension, fine, warning, or nothing to club, player, and official

then all this would be over.

The number of 'other' fans that have arrived on our board over this is incredible.

Yeah but teachers don't get thousands of people screaming abuse at them, and players having a go at them on a regular occurrence. How often do players act in a professional way to referees? Works both ways I'm afraid. Unless you replace referees with emotionless androids.

This is simply wrong. Teachers get abuse all the time - and we are responsible for your children, so I KNOW, you don't want us making it personal. Watch that video of the Ref thumping the player and starting a brawl if you want to see what will happen if refs react emotively to events.

Yes but this is hardly thumping a player, it's just one little snide comment. It may be slightly unprofessional, but referees are human and as humans have emotions. Obviously it is their job to keep them in check, and most of the time they do. Also what is also unprofessional are players screaming in the ref's face, so you can't complain about one little snide comment without also complaining about players who have goes at players as that is just having double-standards, though somehow the general impression seems to be that the latter is more acceptable because it's seen as being part of the game.

It's like when the crowds give a particular player lots of abuse, then he gives them some stick back. As long as it's nothing like sticking a finger up at them (which this is not really the equivalent of), then you have no right to get on your high horse about it. If you can give it, you can take it (within reason!).

No, I think it cuts both ways. I expect both the players and the referees to act like pros and to be respected as such by the other side.

I think players should get carded for throwing fits at referees (as Lallana did) and if someone from Saints had made a personal remarks to Clattenburg similar to the one which he is accused of making to Lallana I'd have no problem with a card/fine/warning/suspension.

I like how people are judging before they hear both sides of the story.

Yes, judging by what happened with Osvaldo we are bound to get a good response, not.

I was impressed with the Referee at the Edinburgh derby last night, a superb performance, I noted that he was sponsored by Specsavers, that may explain a lot, free eye tests?
