Just in very recent history: Hernandez - **** first season, majority thought he was cack and wanted rid, went on to score 20+ goals, everyone loved him, **** third season, most want rid again Jak - awful few years, constant mistakes, good half a season and everyone thinks he's Buffon Harry - vast majority spent years saying he wasn't and will never be good enough, cash in when we can, just got close to £20m for him It's clear Marshall had a **** season but he's now got a summer to reflect and get into a positive state of mind. New season, new management and coaching team, it's like a fresh start. The difference with Marshall is he's got years of proof throughout his career that he's a very good, steady keeper, it's not just guesswork or 'potential' he's been there and donenit consecutively for a long time. Writing him off after a poor 4 months with everything else that was going on on and off the pitch with the whole team in disarray under terrible management is IMO completely absurd.
Except he was poor at the end with Cardiff too. When we signed him I saw a fair bit about how he'd been average the previous season for them and they weren't too bothered to see him go. Your point about Harry and Hernandez is silly as Hernandez started quite well for us in the PL and was only in and out with injuries/his kid being born which affected his form. Harry looked good from the start.
I'm not writing Marshall completely off, but it's a huge gamble to start with him as the number 1 keeper. If he isn't in form he definitely would have to be dropped, we can't afford to hope he plays his way into form again. The same goes for McGregor. Both Bruce and Phelan kept with them during bad spells and it hurt us.
That's a bit polar to all the Cardiff fans I saw seething about only getting £5m for their best player.
Guess everyone reads different sets of opinions then, but I was hardly shocked when he was poor for us.
Ye, they certainly weren't happy to see him leave. I don't think he was treated fairly by City fans. Did Davies, Dawson and Elmo perform any worse than him this year?
You have a short memory if you think the points about Harry and Abel are incorrect. You may have rated them both as I did but the majority absolutely didn't have much time for either. In fact most people literally hated Hernandez after his first season and it took probably until Christmas before people started to change their opinions.
They thought the deal was £6m and some thought it too low, the only ones that seemed not bothered, were those who wanted the money to improve the squad... http://www.cardiffcityforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=175060
http://www.not606.com/threads/city-transfer-thread.302198/page-255 3 or 4 pages at that point which pretty much sum up the opinion on Abel. Plenty more in that thread as well if that's not enough for you.
Amazing isn't it? The fact that there are no suitors after those worse players who are higher earners seems to be considered immaterial.
Me saying that's what we should be aiming to do and what ends up being possible are two entirely different things.
Wow we're really rattling up the pages of dross on whether Marshall is **** or not & whether we'd prefer Jak to stay. At the end of the day whatever happens is not in OUR hands, whether we like it or not. LS will come in, do what he does & either the players he picks will be successful or they won't. By successful I mean promotion in whatever way it happens. If he goes with Marshall: 1. I'll be disappointed 2. I'll be shocked 3. I'll hope he does well, despite my reservations. Anyway, here's another post as we race into 100 pages of non transfer ****e before a player is signed.
Possibly some might have but I know I was very keen that we retain Hernandez, he just seemed very likely to leave.
Easy to say that in hindsight, I don't remember anyone having much hope for Abel. In fact, I'm pretty sure that if we had received a remotely half decent offer for him, he'd have gone. I still reckon he'll be gone this summer though
There was a small number of us who could see he had ability and hadn't written him off. A very small number, which pretty much proves my point. How many people were still calling him a bag of **** a year ago? Form comes and goes. Marshall could just as likely be a hero this time next year.
Tbf he's a very good championship striker but I'm not quite sure he'll ever cut the mustard in the PL. His all round game has too many weaknesses, especially hold up play. For a side like us who's never going to be high up in the PL (if we ever manage to get back), he's really not what we need. Of course, Championship is different but I think he'll get offers from China
