McLaughlin ex Burton keeper wasn't released. He'd reached the end of his contract and turned down two contract offers to stay at Burton. They clearly rated him.
Of the 3 keepers (Jak, Marshall and McGregor), he was the most saleable asset. Good financial decision, poor footballing decision. But if it's means another £2m off the debt, which means the sale price of club becomes a little bit more tempting for future potential buyers, then so be it.
